Not an option, State Gov. made sure of that by legislating that all jobs will be kept for at least 3 years... so maybe in 3 years time they'll be handing out redundancy packages, but not before then... and I was not going to hang around for 3 years.

It was not a spur of the moment decision, we've had time to prepare and my wife and I thoroughly discussed the matter beforehand. We can survive on 1 income - ok we won't be living like Kings but we'll be ok.

Besides I expect I'll pick up some work easy enough.

Problem with that theory is that if it was like NSW Health and it's almagamation of health areas, the redundancies were doled out to very few. The people affected by the amalgamation were told their job was not continuing and then had to hang aound in limbo for years until their tier was amalgamated, apply for the new position. Be successfull or unsuccessful, then wait to be offered 3 other jobs in health (over a 3 year period) - apply etc etc before being offered the redundancy.

Why hang around for that!

That's what I really want to do but I'm too far the wrong side of 50. Even though I work (!!!) for the WA state gov., that age works against you even though it's not supposed to.
Totally bored and on what they call re-deployment (due to reshuffles) while a new position is found, but it'll only be much the same as I'm doing now and may mean me going into the city everyday, which would leave me much worse off.
So same crap work and less money for beer!

its called a union negotiated job protection deal with the Govt to stop them downsizing and throwing their members on the scrap heap.

personally think they should negotiate a redundancy package and open it to those who wish to take it as nothing worse than a series of acting temporart positions to make morale sink to the ocean floor.

When the Howard government was elected in 1996, they had already made the secret decision that the CES was to be closed down and its functions handed over to private sector mates as a milk cow. Packages were available to all who wanted one. All through this the govt. kept saying that the CES would continue. It didn't.

Dept of Social Security was turned into Centrelink and packages, to my observation, were restricted to manager's relatives and concubines, notorious brown nosers, officers who were so inefficient even management noticed, and those officers who were a thorn in management's side. As a general rule, no-one over 55 was to receive a package, and I was over 55. Anyone who was productive and efficient was needed to do the work so they would not get an offer. Morale sank to the basement and staff started digging. There has been little improvement since with staff entrances virtually revolving doors.

Funillyenough they are doing it again, centrelink has been told to shed approx 2000 positions but have told the staff that voluntary redundancies are not on the cards as yet. However a number of older long term senior people have suddenly put up their hands to fall on their swords to protect the plebs.... Curious behaviour. A lot of the people who took packages around 1997 are back with centrelink in high paid management positions as the government of the day decided it had lost a generation of knowledge, Jobs for the boys??????????????????????
