    New defender axle loads.

I was just looking at the LR uk website and i see they have std and heavy duty versions of the defender. Now the std ones have the same axle load limits as all 110's have had, 1250kg front 1850kg rear. But the HD version has 1580kg front and 2200kg rear. Is this just a suspension thing or has LR actually made the axle housings stronger in some way for these versions?
    Just curious.

My 1995 130 has 1500kg front and 2200kg rear axle loads.
My guess is it's just the springs, my 130 fronts are stiffer than 110 ones and the rears have the inner helpers.

Attached page taken from the 1999 & 2002MY workshop manual for Defender.

Yes it's all in the springs!

Just to add, changing to heavy duty springs won't allow you to carry more unless you get a mod plate with the new weights on it. Don't know how hard this would be.

I have put hd springs in my truck but only to get back the ground clearance after putting the winch/bullbar on it and carrying tools and extra spare around.

And there I was thinking that maybe Land rover had done something to strenghten the axle houseing. Thought maybe the standard one had a structural limitation to 1250kg. Hence the special cast front axle housing on some of the army landrovers. Must have just been an australian army thing.
    Thanks curiosity cured.

I've looked into this a bit with the Discovery II and there are some interesting things to look for which help determine the max axle weights.

On the D2, (apart from the suspension) the tyre load ratings are a determining factor, as is the rim load rating.

the cast centre ADF front axles are an Australian thing.

Interestingly, 130man has a heavily trussed rear axle on his 130 that appears factory made.
His beast is a 2000 model which should have a Sals back end but uses a P38 style liftout centre and the biggest, strongest looking trussed axle tubes I've seen.
It's ex Telstra NT and I know that these were cracking axle housings thanks to the way Telstra loaded them and the way they were driven/flogged there.
Quite a number of 130's were at one stage sitting in a yard at Alice Springs awaiting new axle housings a few years back, so maybe they were replaced with UK Army Wolf style rear ends ??

I believe un the uk the 110 HD is also known as the wolf (ie, an army vehicle). Not sure of the exact differences though.
