    Battery reccomendations

    As the title really.

I need a second battery, mainly to run the fridge for our trip in a couple of weeks, but want one that can also cope with the winches if I am messing about. Original battery is still running the car.

I have all the wiring sorted and just need a battery.

    So what do people suggest.

maximum envelope size is 320 long by say 185 wide and 220 high

Only other consideration is that the battery box is in the back body, so in the passenger compartment so may need an AGM?

budget.... Ideally under $400 . well under if possible!!

    Cheers
    Pete.

Haze Gel batteries , very affordable, my small Haze Gel has an 85A/H capacity and It takes me 16 hours to trickle charge it but they are awesome batteries for the Price.

I've tried flooded deep cycle, flooded starting and now AGL batteries since 1999.

For me, an important factor is how fast you can bulk recharge the battery from the vehicle's alternator. The flooded deep cycle was the slowest, the flooded starting was better but AGMs can really suck in the higher charging currents for longer, reducing charging times.

I am biased... as I supply Optimas to list members throughout Australia.

Suggest you check out the marine (Blue Top) D34M. Marine because it has conventional posts for your winch connection, and bolts for other accessories.
Full details at Optima Blue Top

PM me for pricing if you decide on an Optima.

A full river agm 90ah is 307x169x211. Should be well under $400. I get mine from springers in Bris and use the 90 as a start batt for the stage 1 and 120ah as house batts. They cop a flogging and just love it. Can't beat a member that wants to sell you an optima either. you could prob borrow mine if you are pushed for cash.

Over here in the UK, many people sell Optima (Red & Yellow top). They have built themselves a good name but reliability is a question...

We sell (ONLY in the UK) Odyssey's. You will get 2 PC1700's in a standard Defender battery box. Very reliable, more cranking amps than a red top and more Ah than a yellow top. Better still they are dual purpose so no need for 1 red and 1 yellow.

    Excellent units.

I have been told that it is not a good idea to connect two batteries of a different type: ie lead acid & gel cell etc.

.......Also how are you going to charge the second one?,isolator or switch?.

.......Just for info, I fried two large Optimas, at the same time, within six months of purchase & was given my money back, without explanation!.

.......I now run three AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) without any changes made to the electrical system, bar adding an additional battery. They have worked really well for the last 18 months.

Hi Pete, if your planning on using the auxiliary battery for winching then you can only use a cranking or dual purpose battery and not a deep cycle.

You will also need to run fairly heavy cable and you will need a suitable means of joining the batteries together while winching.

A marine battery switch is usually the best way to parallel the batteries while winching.

Hi 1103.9TDI, actually, other than the potential to waste a small amount of stored capacity, there is no real reason why you can’t parallel different types of automotive batteries.

I’ve got many customers that run such set ups and have no problems what so ever, it’s one of those many battery myths.

As to your Optimas frying, I suspect there must have been a problem with the two you had ( a batch problem perhaps ) rather than a problem with optima batteries in general.

Optima batteries are genuine AGMs and can normally tolerate a hell of a lot more abuse then average AGM can take, and for the much higher price, they should.
