If you are after cheap to run, maybe consider Astra diesel or Camry/Corolla. Remember that the Golfs/307s/c4s and other VAG or PSA vehicles are cheap to fuel, not cheap to run. They all have higher maintenance costs etc than Japanese and local models, and probably higher insurance/rapid depreciation. Case in point, a friend of mine had a 1.9 TDI Polo and the servicing costs pushed him to sell it and buy a new Toyota.

derpeciation is not an issue for us (itll be run till it is scrap) but good point
insurance... hmm... wife is under 25 so insurance is going to be a rip regrdless
at the price we are looking it'll probably be outta warranty (apart from dealer if we go down that path) so we'll be doing the maintenance, or do they need more regular services? 10000km rather than 15000km?

If I ever buy a small car it will be a Polo Tdi. I hired a new polo 1.4/1.5? Tdi in europe a few years back. Even sitting at 140km/h on the french autobahns and 180 or so on the german ones, it still only used 4-4.5l/100km.

In addition to that, it was so well designed and practical, EVERYTHING was in the right place.

I learnt to drive in a diesel Peugeot 405 and it was a great car to drive and was quite reliable but general maintenance costs were quite high. I would be looking at a Honda of some description (either an Accord or Civic depending on size requirements) as I have a Honda Integra with over 350 000 km on the clock with only oil changes. The body is going to fall apart before the engine dies.

    Hi Simon,
Oh dear, what's Gloria been up to now?
I've got a great idea. Sell the Disco, buy Gloria a pug307 or similar and buy the Isuzu County in the market section.
    Then everyones happy
    Cheers
    Danny
