    Daily driver wanted, non LR

looking for another daily driver for the missus

smashed her car the other day, no injuries.
even if it is not a write-off (pretty sure it is) want a safer/better built car than the current hyundai excell (not hard)

looking to spend about $15000. what do people recommend?

we are looking for something in the small/mid size, golf/astra/camry/pug307/lancer sorta range something cheap to run as she does 100km/day getting to and from work

liked the look of VW golf/bora and peugeot 307(tdi)
couldnt convince her to take the disco and let me get an old fender
ive googled a few reviews but a bit of real world advice is in order now

    Cheers
    Simon

    New or used?

I assume used in that price bracket.

My wife has a 2004 Corolla and it has not given any trouble. Bought it one year old with 8k on it. Only money spent being book servicing and new tyres. It's only done 27k in 4 years though.

No idea what it costs to run exactly but it is cheap.

yeah like the looks of the new tdi's
entertained the idea of a new one but not interested in getting into too much debt for a car at this point in time

Hyundai, well made, cheap and has a 5 year warranty

Both Daughters have one each, Accents, a 2 door and a 4 door.
Never had a spot of bother with them.
The Getz is also a tough little bugger. Mate of mine has one, his wife got T boned in it from a clown running a red light.
She was fine, car written off, so he bought another

Any thing over an Astra. One I would contemplate would be a subaru forester or an RX. Forester is a good size to drive and park and carry stuff and rx is just a nice car all around. Cheap to maintain. Good on fuel. Safe as houses. Forester is commonly converted to lpg now and if you did that you wouldn't even know you owned one when you pulled your wallet out. Oh and the AWD is a great bonus for a small car. you can pick them up cheap.

i liked the look of the pug but doing (rough and probably flawed) maths you gotta drive alotta kms to make up for the higher purchase price of the tdi vehicles. how reliable are the pugs n vws? ive read some good reviews but that only goes so far

we have contemplated a medium vehicle on lpg, think a forrester is a bit big, worth looking into tho

much appreciated please keep em coming

well. this is something different, last year the missus wrote off two getz's one 15 months old and the replacement was 4 weeks old, now have a toyota yaris as the replacement,
just came back from sydney , went down for the weekend, so i figured the 3 of us would handle the trip in it instead of the disco, 1600kms used about 50 litres of fuel,
filled up at heatherbrae on the way down and kempsey on the way back.

Forget diesel, this little thing is frugal, plus i was putting ethanol blend in it.

    my 5 cents worth

    joh
