Fit a Traxide headlight wiring harness upgrade and some IPF Fatboy bulbs. Not as good as HID but half the price and still effective.
So I have cracked the sads with the fender lights and am looking for an upgrade so I can see. Been quoted $450 FOR HID UPGRADE does anyone know what they are like and if it's worth the $. Also What other options are there?

Can a new harness make that much difference, and is it justme or are defender light's just S**t.
Yhanks for the info I'll look into it.
I rewired the lights, now I can actually see the headlights on the road in front of me.
Major improvement.
Cheers

I rewired the Disco lights with a prototype Traxide kit and measured with a light meter a 20% improvement in light output. That might not seem like much but in reality it is a vast improvement. Also with the upgrade you will avoid the burnt switch syndrome that appears to be a problem with Defenders.

No 20% is good but the question remanins is it worth the $$ for the HID kit and install and is a HID going to offer me more light and better vision than a loom upgrade. I have decided to do something about the poor light so $200 or $500 it's going to get fixed the best I can. I have a set of Roo Lights on the fender for country driving which are Good and much cheeper than the Light Force I had on the FJ40 but it's general driving that bothers me at the moment. If I run over the wifs cat she'll not forgive me.

Yes all of the above.
Drivesafe is the member to contact.
Ive got his upgrade kit in my D2 both headlight and driving lights!!!,with it you can then put great globes in.
Landrover in their wisdom still put all the headlight power draw thru the light switch. It leads to burnt out lighting switches(Defender/County/Series mostly).
Tims kit gives you QUALITY relays and wiring to convert the original wiring to a trigger only to your lights, the lights then draw direct from the battery/alternator not thru the wiring system!!!.No voltage drop and BIG bulbs can be safely used.LOADS of us done it!!! The difference is amazing, and its a real easy DIY job, dont doubt you electrical abilities, the instructions are primary school stuff!!!
Have a go

Wow those are expensive HID lights. I currently have 6 35W HID lights fitted to my land rover and couldn't be happier. All 6 lights cost me around $400 by simply buying the kits and fitting them myself.
They are definitely the way to go and produce brilliant white light. Are you thinking of changing your headlights or spot lights?
If you want to fit HID's to your headlights you really should use a projector system so that the glare to oncoming motorists is minimized. I'm not using a projection system for my headlights, simply a standard 7" reflector and a bi xenon kit. There is a little bit of glare with this setup for oncoming motorist.
The kits I've used are pretty well the cheapest I could find on ebay and they are incredibly durable. I've had them now for 3 years and the units fitted to my driving lights have been completely underwater numerous times and they work every time.
By the way, if you do go the HID route do not be tempted by the high kelvin rating lamps, get 43-4500 kelvin lamps as this is as close to white as you can get. Anything higher than this and you start going blue.
When I was looking into this, I did some research and found a very good site which explains all about HID lighting:
