Seems to have strayed a little from the original question - but if you want to know which is the "best" Disco, then first you have to define "best", and I don't think anyone has actually tried to do that. Probably up to the original poster to say what he means by best, then we might get some sort of consensus. (well, maybe not even then!)

Well it's now 10 years old, go have a look in the cover of your owners manual and then you better take it down to the dealers to get them tere airbags checked to see if they will work in an accident.
Funny thing about statistics, they can say what ever you want them too.
Airbags are a bandaid fix to a major problem, a lot of people dont drive their cars properly.
When my wife totaled the 80 series cruiser, she hit a WB 1 tonner in the drivers side door.
With no airbags in either car, she had a bruise across her chest from the seat belt and he had a scratch above his eye from a piece of glass.
Now from that I would say, put some strength back into the body of the cars we drive (which they are doing now via new steel technologies and better design structures) and that Bull bars save lives as the one on the Landcruiser spread the load across the side of his ute and not just wrapped the whole 3 tonnes around the headboard into the cabin.
She hit him at around 60kmh no braking at all as he pulled out of a side street without looking.
I hunted high and low for my Disco without airbags for the reason that they are more a hinderence than a help.
You can all believe what you want, its a free world to think what you want (well at least Australia is) but if the question is which is the best Disco well why limit your options by having airbags.
You can drive the car without them.
I dont think there is a best Disco after all this, I think mine does the job I ask it to do and thats about it, Im happy with it but as far as Im concerned, a car is only as good as it's owner/driver and how it's looked after and driven and that can be anything.
If you dont mind spending dollars on fuel then D1 V8 or if you dont need a long range then V8 on gas.
If you want the reliability and range that a Diesel provides then 200Tdi or 300Tdi D1 or 300Tdi auto which I chose.
If you dont mind paying a bit more for repairs and you wnat oll the gimicks and electrickery then by a D2 of any sort
And if you want more reliable electrickery (but still electrickery) then buy a D3.
My thoughts that's all, if you dont like it tough.
Some life, have to give up work, lose your house, have to be on medication that makes you depressed and damages your organs because of the amounts of painkillers, antibiotics and anti depressants.
Yeah, I wouldnt want anybody dead but before the accident he was one of the hardest working blokes Id met with his own business, nice new house, heaps of toys (boat, bikes etc) and for that to happen to him because of an airbag going off a fraction of a second too late..........all I can say is it is a shame.
I have plenty more stories, it isnt a one off but this thread is about what Disco is the best, not airbags......and everyone knows that Casper is the best of the best so.....I think the question has been answered![]()
Thanks for the reminder Macca, actually the 10 years is up in August, I'm saving for quite an expensive changeover- well worth the money IMHO.

And a lot of people do; but are still unlucky
I'm glad she was not injured. Car accidents are awful. It would be good if they didn't ever occur then we wouldn't even need seatbelts.
Sounds like she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm sure she was driving properly though.
Back to the thread - you will note my early post listing the 98tdi as my favourite - with airbags.
My thoughts that's all. I enjoy reading everyone elses opinion too.![]()
the suggestion that airbags need to be replaced every 10 years is an urban myth and I've checked this with LRA and NRMA.
Anyone who thinks that airbags aren't a major health benefit is kidding themselves. Sure, in some cases the airbags themselves have hurt people, but are you trying to say that you haven't vaccinated your kids because there's less than a one in million chance of an adverse reaction to the vaccine...
Yes, yes, vehicles should be more solidly built and people should drive better - shame about those unexpected moments when you end up hitting a tree to avoid a truck coming around the corner on your side of the road - I think you might appreciate an airbag in that scenario.
In any case, unless you're prepared to drive a 20/30/40yo car, everyone's going to have airbags eventually...
Always looking for creative new ways to get bogged... :whistling:
76 RR...sold coz fuel was expensive at 70c/l
93 200 Tdi Disco...old faithful...sold to make way for...
99 Td5 Disco ACE...nice drive...hopefully reliable...
...
So air bags are the Devils work then?
If this thread goes much longer then i'm sure we'll see a link between air bags and global warming...
I'm going out to get mine disconnected if they are that bad, actually also my ABS as that's are sure to be a hinderance in an accident...in fact my climate control is also out the window, hate to doze off in some warm preset cabin temp and have my Airbags and ABS let me down just when i need them ( assuming that my bad driving comes with having ABS, ACE and Airbags as a rule ), and my ACE is sure to fail somehow in a spot i need it the most, such as avoiding an accident by swerving around floundering non ABS cars and the like, causing me to rely on my hopelessly inadequate Airbags and ABS...
Actually, I think i'll leave the comforts of the D2 at home from now on and stick to driving my Kombi van, it has no ABS ( good old drums ), no Airbags, no power steering, and goes so slow i don't ever have to worry about slowing down in a hurry!, can't even de-fog the windscreen in it, so that must be much safer in modern traffic right??
So the best Disco is one without any modern saftey aids....question answered, glad we all agree!
Ray
No I don't agree .... the best car (call it a disco if you will because it went to just about as many places a a disco) was my mums 1963 VW beetle. It went to the moon and back on the smell of a kleenex tissue, sounded better than any yank V8, had no ABS - didn't ever break down, no airbags (thank goodness otherwise my mum would have been killed if and when she hit something), had no ACE and biy did we know that when she took the old forest rd bend at penshurst, and moreover I leanrt to drive on it (togetehr with some series LR out on a farm at Armidale and Condobolin)... The moden day disco is an elktrical wizzardry thats going to cause more grief than Dubya Bush IMHO. Stick with an early model VW beetle rather than any earth polluting 300tdi (even if its the early models without face smashing ABS!)
GO VW! And with that stuff any other opinions.
