    narrowing down tyre choice

i hope this is ok in general.

i'm getting some 245/70 tyres next week for the d2. so far i think i've narrowed it down to the d694/d694lt.

probably be a 70/30 split in favour of bitumen running/average offroad.

i currently have the michelin synchrome(sp?) in 235/70. they seem like a good tyre, but a bit average for the stuff i drive offroad. mainly sand and rocky terrain.

would these bridgestones be a good tyre? still good onroad and a bit better off it? i'm also worried about puncture resistance and overall tyre life.

lastly, the 694 is $215 and the lt version is $265. is the difference worth it?

if you guys have any other a/t suggestions for under 280 each, please let me know. i was looking at the bfg a/t's but am a bit turned off them after some reports from my uncle.

also looked at the goodyear atr's. heard they wear fast though.

    thanks.

the LT is the light truck version.

much tougher tyre and sometimes slightly different edge profile, not familiar with that model tho.

i had some on my v8 disco years ago and i thought they were a good tyre but did very little other than mild touring in it.

we have the 694 on our x-trail in a LT. ITHe wear has been great, and traction p[retty good. I've heard of poor wear rates on some vehicles, but mainly big landcruisers.

Ours were only $165, although they are only 215 somthings, so a bit smaller.

    simon,
i just had the exact same fitted to the d2, in the end i decided against the lt version both due to price and also comfort. my tyre guy suggested the lt may be too stiff in the sidewall for general running and more suited to loaded utes.
on road they are very nice, not too noisy and car handles well.
off road i have only done the recent trip with the guys here and although i damaged rims and nuts the tyres still look unharmed (even after a wee burnout on a rock)
    cheers

have the bfg's a/t 245/70 on my d2....fantastic.have done 70k lots of tread left,no punctures, not noisy& find good grip off road & on.

    would go them again

    dont know about cost....

some people say they dont grip well on bituman, but never had a problem.

had xpc's (michelin) before.but find bfg better

scarry, the on-road stuff is what i was told is their negative. since i will in reality be driving mostly in the suburbs and sealed main roads, this is important to me.

on the 694LT issue, my local bridgestones told me that they have 8 belts rather than 6, and this is the only difference. can i assume this is the belts under the tread, rather than the sidewalls?

i think i'll go with the bridgestones. my brother's patrol has them on it, about 60% left when he got it, and they seem good.

just have to think about the extra $200 for Lt or not. we're going to the flinders next week and it'd suck to destroy a tyre on those roads.

    ummmm....forgot something

hope they are not the same as the oem tyres on the pootrol or some navaras,as they never seem to last long.

the way to tell is to measure the tread depth& compare it to say a bfg or cooper for example.you can get tread depth figures off the relevant sites on the internet

the lt may also have a different weight rating

    hope this helps

    cheers

i got the 694lts on mine.. japanese made i think too..

i paid 215 i think it was on special.. about march that was and then 5% off i think for RAC discount.. they were cheaper than the non LT's

they seem to ride very well and seem good in the sand too.. quiet and grippy in the wet too.. the 693 and 694 do get a bit of a bad rap for tyre wear but it seems like that was the older one.

    Thanks

    Steve

the aussie made models i read were a bit dodgy for consistency. so far bridgestones dont want to budge from 265 each. i'll ring around and see if anyone will better that price.

    Thumbs up Yokohama G012 A/T

My choice for what it is worth and I run them on my Disco is Yokohama G012-ATS. As good on road as is off road, especially in sand. I have run nothing but Yokohama on both my Disco's now and the new G012 is a fantastic AT tyre.
