I would say a D90 or D110 Would outperform a D2, and a D2 may outperform a D130 (due to no traction control)
The Defender has more wheel travel than the D2.
something that has been on my mind for some time...
appearances aside, and given similar tyre selection, which is the most capable offroad and why?

Defender has better approach and departure angles, I'm not sure about the ramp over angle.
The Defender body doesn't get in the way and therefore the driver might push it a bit more, psycological I know but it makes a difference.
Steve.
I would say as long as the vehicles are stock except for the tyres the d90 is the clear front runner and I think the 110 due to ground clearance and approach/departure angles is better off too.
As was said wheel travel is superior with the Defender.
I've seen stock discos get stuck where stock Defenders continue on easily.
I have to say though the comfort of the disco makes the driving a lot more pleasurable though (i know we are not going in to this debate I was just amazed when I compared D1 to Defender on similar terrain).
Xavier.
I would say the defender because of the amount of ground clearancs from standard and the overall ruggedness of the whole car.
CHEERS TIM.
ok so seems ground clearance and approach angles are area where the def is better......
....but it is really worth giving up ALL that comfort??
That was my debate when I was looking for one.
The Defender is the most comffy car Ive ever been in![]()
Surprisingly the longer wheel base irons out a lot of humps and bumps.
Not long after changing from a D1 to a 110, I was traversing a paddock along a track at moderate speed and went over a small contour bank which crossed the track. I reckon the 110 had much less pitch and wallop than would have been the case in the D1. So ride comfort is IMHO better ... not going to go there as regards bling and creature comforts ...![]()
Keeping in mind I'm talking stocker vehicles here:
I think the Defender 110 is the most capable. They have taller tyres, better diff clearance with the P38a diff, better approach and departure. I'm not sure re ramp over with the 110, but the belly clearance seems to be better also. I dont think that they have better articulation when compared to an ACE Disco2 at all, though definately in comparison to a nonACE Disco2.
I think the next most capable is the D2. The suspension travels very well in ACE spec and it has stronger suspension components amd better balanced suspension, but its hangup so to speak is its longer tail which has a reduced departure angle. Each end is plastic also which doesn't help.
Next I tend to think is the D90, it may be short but that does nothing to help it climb and keep wheels on deck and likewise its articulation is poor. I was stunned at how ordinary these were on LROC TT's. ETC helps, but as it does with the above also. In stock form I think that they are disappointing offroad, but suspension tweaking will no doubt liven them right up.
D130... long, stiff and probably great for touring, but thats about it as a stocker. Appalling offroad ability. No articulation, no ramp over.
In terms of comforts.... The D2 is lightyears ahead in every respect. I just can not believe that anybody would honestly think that the Defenders interior environment is nicer in any repect apart from utility like.
Cheers
