Exactly what I was thinking....when you find the Ahole that did this...force feed him some T-Bone steak seasoned with 1080, see whether he likes it.

1080, or sodium flouroacetate, contains no arsenic. But many Australian plants contain it as a defence evolved against herbivores, so that herbivores and hence predators on them have evolved a certain amount of tolerance to it.

Its main attraction as a pesticide is that it is effective in very small doses (human lethal dose is quoted as 2-10mg) so that a lethal dose is undetectable and that the animals most susceptible to it include dogs, cats, pigs and foxes, while most natives are less susceptible (although possums are, so it is in widespread use in NZ to control them). But note that it is considered ineffective against cats since they will not eat dead food in the wild.

Its main drawback is that there is no antidote, and no effective treatment. Treatment after symptoms appear is rarely successful.

Good news this afternoon, we could take her home (well back to where we are staying with my folks). She has a chest infection and cough to get over - not supprising given she had her stomach drained and a breathing tube, but is otherwise just weakend and lost some weight and condition. Vet still wants to see her again tomorrow and we have a course of anti-biotic tablets for her to complete. I can't believe she has survived, but we are both so happy to see her up and walking again.
