Thread: Holiday from Hell

We're having a holiday from hell. I know DullBird's Defender has also died, but apart from our Disco tragedy and damage to the hire vehicle that got us to my folks place in western Victoria this is what has since transpired.

Yesterday afternoon, my mother's whippet started having seizures and died within 20 minutes before we could get her to the Vet. The vet suspected it was 1080. Then 3 hours later our poor GSP started the same but we made it to the vet. There is absolutely no antitode for 1080 apart from anthesising the animal and putting it on a drip then hoping it pulls through.

Poor Vala (our GSP) has survived 22 hours so far and we hope she pulls through. It is horrifying and we are all upset. The bait would have been thrown over the fence and the dog's picked it up. Mum's whippet was very greedy and we suspect she got the full dose whilst our GSP only got a partial dose.

Pearl, the poor whippet's, death was one of the most horrible things I've had to witness - and we could do nothing! Our GSP was acting funny when we left for the vet and we only just made it as she started down the same path.

The lethal dose of 1080 for a dog is 0.06mg/kg body mass. One Foxoff bait (3mg) is enough to kill a 50kg dog.

We suspect the bait(s) were thrown into the house yard by some low life. Either way the next step is to report al thats happened to DPI and police, but I suspect there is nothing else can be done. We've notified all the neighbouring properties to be careful with their animals.

Anyway sorry to go on a bit, we're all kind of in shock.

I hope your dog makes a full recovery. I'm surprised how many people here have GSPs, I had one when they were first introduced to Oz; a GSP forum maybe?
