Clothes would be good.
Pack for a pommie spring for Sydney.
Pack for the tropical winter for the cape and Cairns.
Flying out to meet up with Brendan on Saturday, I will be out your way for the next 6 weeks ish and panic is setting in, what the heck do I stuff in my suitcase. Cunning plan is get Bren to pick me up in Sydney, spend a couple of days with the inlaws in Sydney and then head north with a view to going up to Cape York, get chucked out to catch a plane in Cairns and then fly home and back to work.
I reckon these weather forecasting websites tell downright fibs or at least don't factor in the camping bit and being outside.
So do I pack woolies/sweatshirts and what not, or shorts and teeshirts and just the odd bit of outer warm stuff? I know I will be in the dog house big time if I go for overkill and pack everything!

Where are you coming from?
Pack warm clothes and some summer clothes, it will be cold at night, around 0 Celcius and below, but once your above the Tropic of Capricorn it will warm up, take mossie netting and a good repellant too.
Watch out for drop bears too
Baz.
Cheers Baz.

There are shops here in the colonies, and the Aussie dollar is still 2 for 1 against the pound so what you don't pack, doesn't really matter. For example, I would never waste suitcase space with things like mosquito repellant - just get a small bottle/can when you get here if you need it.
Sydney winter is cool, but not freezing. Cairns will defiitely be more summery (mid 20-degrees yesterday) and quite humid even in winter. Go to www.bom.gov.au for some "official" weather info.
Excellent. you can come out on our lithgow trip on Wednesday the 23rd of this month.
As others have said don't stress. It sounds like all you need is some clothes for mild to hot weather and anything you'd always personally carry maybe if you take any medicine/health care items etc. Brendan must already have any essentials for being in the area as he has been here for a little.
I think you should take some valium before the flight too....I so very dislike long flights.

Hi Barbara,
The "layer principle" is a good thing to keep in mind (ie. If you're hot, take a layer off, if cold, put another layer on).
For guidance:
Sydney has a forecast max. of 20°C today (but has been as low as 15°C in the past week). The min. tonight is forecast to be 9°C in the city (3°C away from the coast).
Cairns had a max of 26°C today (& humid - 70%).
Generally speaking, if remaining close to the coast, temperatures will be mild, however, if travelling inland, diurnal ranges will be much greater & frosts common.
As a guide, at short notice I had to travel to Mackay (in QLD) in May, last year. When there, I had to buy some shorts & thongs as it was too warm (& wet). The locals in Mackay don't bother wearing raincoats as they are too hot and you will be dry shortly later.
I would, however, have a raincoat (Goretex?) for a lot of places in Aus. As well as keeping you dry, they are also excellent for stopping wind chill.
HTH,
Thanks a lot, that gives me a good idea of what to shove in the case.
I don't need to bother with my boots and goretex jacket as they travelled separately with the 110.
Bren should have the mossie stuff as he would have needed it when I wasn't there. I act as mossie bait when I am there

Hi Barbara
Just come back from 6 week nth west Aus. t-shirts & shorts all the way with plenty of swimming. Warm jacket & long pants for cooler weather. the cape is just the same this time of year. down sth Sydney way you might need a bit more warmth but you did say you had gortex stuff so you should be right. to-day in brissy I had a singlet on but then it did cool down later
Don't forget the thongs.... it's an aussie tradition
