Cooter, in central QLD diesel fitters are like hen's teeth. Head north and make a quid or two.
I know Hasting Deering, Allight, the mines in general and everyone else are looking for fitters.
Bugger!!! Sorry to hear that.
Might not feel like it at the moment but most guys I know who have been on the receiving end have ended up better off in the long run. Keep your mind open and you may find opportunities in strange places.
The reason you are finding it difficult getting into mining is most mining companies contract out their diesel workshop work. Mostly mining companies directly employ fitters and leccies. As a diesel mech you are more than qualified to get a job as a fitter. Some of the companies for diesel mechanics are Westrac (Caterpiller), Liebherr, Komatsu etc.
