The closure of the "underperforming" stores in Australia was the result of conditions specific to Australia that were not reflected elsewhere in the world, Starbucks' chief executive Howard Schultz said in a statement.
I wonder if the "conditions specific to Australia" is that unlike Americans we know what a good coffee tastes like. They only discovered proper coffee about 10 years ago and then acted like they invented the stuff.

ps I don't drink coffee but that doesn't stop me having an opinion.

    ECH.
home roasting, Ummmmmm, This is a real skill, I have spent time up where our coffee is grown, they dry their beens for sale, also roast as well, we were abel to play around with their small batch sample roasters, this showed us just how much skill is involved and what can go wrong.
We were abel to try different roasts as well as tast faults in roasting, this was a fantastic experience !
By the end of the day our eyes were poping and we were buzzing,
A bit dificult sleeping that night though

agreed it's tough to learn, but life is about learning isn't it? I try to teach myself a new skill every year, whether we are talking DIY electronics design, making a great latte or sewing my own canvas accessories for the landie... well that's the last three years covered

never say never without trying first is my motto

thanks for the offer - probably a bit far to ship it though
I can get all kinds of green beans here from all over the world for about A$8/kilo. Once roasted, the same beans can reach $60 a kilo - another reason to have a go myself!

I was buying green beans off Coffeesnobs.com.au but I ran out.

I found it hard to get consistent roasts (using a popcorn popper). I was (and still am) having problems making a decent espresso so I changed to commercially roasted beans to take a variable out of the espresso equation.

I've got a reasonably good grinder and espresso machine. I think it's time to sell it all as I can see I'll never be able to make decent coffee.

I concur with the praise of Toby's Estate beans. I tried an espresso from their beans recently (Yum Yum's at Hardys Bay, Central Coast NSW?). I liked it so much, that I was tempted to buy some beans. I was dissuaded by the fact that I don't have a good coffee maker.

I also agree with Ron re the importance of the barista. Recently, my partner and I had the occasion to have a coffee at the local cafe at Wiseman's Ferry (Hawkesbury River, NSW). We enjoyed our first cups so much we decided to have seconds. These were made by a different person and were VERY disappointing.

    Best Wishes,
