    300tdi vs 4bd1 hmmmm

did several hundred kilometres in my 300tdi today after not driving it for nearly a week as i have been using the county to work my way through the myriad of things that need fixing etc etc.

man i am going to miss this truck when the time comes to offload it.

like stepping out of a truck and into a sedan.. it is that big a difference..

hopefully i can get the county sorted to somewhere near what the hardtop is now over time but i will have some work ahead of me i think.

Vehicles aside, you feel the 300tdi is that much nicer to drive? or better the devil you know?

Dave our Rangy is great to drive with the Isuzu in it. It must be a County thing???. The differance is off road. The Isuzu comes into its own then.

I think hes going to miss the configuration of his 300TDi... more load space. and less noise.

    on that note...

Dave have you run the spanners over the mounts and plugs again yet?

We run Isuzu's at work and I know were your coming from. They are a good bit of gear but it only took to the front gate driving my Tdi home to realise which I would have.D/Gas goes on in a month or so,so the gap will only get wider. Pat

on road, touring, as an overall ease of use package, and being more available over a wider rev range, yep i reckon the 300tdi wins by a fairly wide margin.

offroad, i cant tell you yet as i havent been there yet, in it.

Yea the rev range sucks, I'll be lifting the governor on mine soon, well let you know how it goes

Don;t need it often at all, but sometimes, well you do

Could always do a driveline swap, you P/van would probably become worth more and you'd get to keep the 300tdi?

The only time the rev range has caused me an issue was climbing the Stockton dunes. I cannot keep up with the V8's, however, when I ran out of gears to shift up to and found myself in 1st high with the revs still dropping rapidly I found a little trick the 4BD1 does that the others don't, it won't bog down and stall instead it will still climb at idle 1st high and slowly climb any obsticle in front of it. On the Freeway or in extremely muddy conditions it cannot be equalled.

The issue I find is not the lack of rev range, but a lack of appropriate around town gearing for the engine to utilise the rev range properly. The 4bd1 walks the walk as well as talks the torque, and will do for a lot longer than the gearbox will. Remember they are engineered to go slow. Some guy from Ipswich once told me that 300hp at the flywheel is achievable but will signifigantly decrease the life expectancy of the engine, perhaps a mild or wild tune up may be an option for you, that way you don't need the rev range.

Personally I think my NA Isuzu, LT95 combo is fast enough for me, I cannot keep up with the RRS's, V8 county's, 300tdi's or even a paper bags blowing down the street but as long as I'm in front of a few irrate Toyo and Hyundai drivers with no overtaking lane in the next few kilometres I am happy.

its not that it isnt fast enough dobbo, its the work you have to put into getting it through some things.

even little things like the length of throw of the gear lever come into it when you step from one to the other....

i dont dislike the 4bd1, in fact i bought it because it is a slow thumper. just wish i could afford the other bank of cylinders

i am just surprised at the difference in drive ability between the two when you step from one to the other and that is what prompted the observation.

i was back into the red rattler today and the new exhaust has really helped it out as it actually made it to 100kph by the bribie pines turn off.

that is a major improvement and it must be breathing much easier than it was.

time will get me to where i want to be with it and i will get used to its nuances i am sure..
