Gday
recently my defender is up for a rebuild, which is quite expensive (long story dont ask)
was looking at the local 4WD wreckers today for some parts for my brothers discovery. an i found a Td5 disco motor for what i think is a reasonable price (dont know the full background of the motor yet may have been rolled).
am i wasting my time even thinkin about puttin a Disco Td5 in a Defender Tdi?
Thanks
Jock

Its not that difficult to do.
The bell hosuing and 1st motion shaft is different on the TDI box, and you would need at least the engine loom and ECU from teh engine (or another engine)
The TD5 isn't that complicated, despite what people think.
You would also need to get the ecu and engine matched for injector codes and security, but i could do that for you once it is connected up as could a few people on here.
Guy on Web Rover did it a while ago.

thinking about this a bit more is the Disco a Manual or auto?

thanks. Justin Cooper is having a look at my Tdi so see if it buggered or not so im not goin to go all out just yet.
the motor is still in the disco and im hoping to ecu and loom would be as well
bloke wants roughly 5 grand for the motor its a manual box so i could get it as well maybe? (5 grand is only the motor not the gearbox as well)
Thanks
Jock
Hi Jock,
The manual box makes it easier as it will have the manual ecu. The Auto ecu makes thing harder. If its >2002 it would have a flashable ecu which makes it easier to chip. The D2 ecus are slightly more powerful than Defenders and IMO are much nicer to drive. (I run one in my 90)
If you could get the engine loom, engine, ecu and box it would make it easier for you as you wouldnt need to get the box converted to suit. Obviously this adds to the cost though.
The Discovery ecu with it being a manual would work with a Defender without too many issues.
The front output flange on the transfer case is different on a D2 but can be swapped for the Defender one off yours.
It may need a bigger rad than the TDI so that would potentually mean the need to swap to a TD5 style rad and intercooler.
There is a bit of work but its not that difficult to do, and it would give you big perfomance improvements but it would take some time.
Happy to anser any questions that I can help with!

Pete.
Personally, Id no be using a Disco TD5 and computers. This setup electronically is a lot more complex with communications with BCUs etc, and I'm pretty sure that the engines ancillaries are setup differently.
If you do the conversion with a wrecked Defender, then you know that everything will fit into the engine bay, the computer and looms will be suitable and the other associated parts like accelerator pedals, radiators etc will suit
Cheers
