    One more day to go!

    Hi all,

    Looks like we pick up our new '08 Defender tomorrow night. Yay!! It would have been sooner except for the problem with the company we were doing the salary sacrificing through. It seems with a payload of 1007kg or thereabouts it goes over the magical one tonne mark and so it is classified as a commercial vehicle in their eyes and they won't salary sacrifice. 'Tis a pity they only decided to look it up when we were just about to hand the money over - dip****s!

    This of course also means we pick up the car late without any of the aftermarket stuff fitted either. It's amazing how one persons lack of attention to detail can make things snowball. Never mind, I will drop the new Deefer off to get its aftermarket gear fitted either Friday or early next week. Our TD5 hasn't sold yet either so we might have two Defenders in the driveway for a while! Then again that's really not such a bad look.....

    Hi cripesamighty.
    If you're having probs. moving the Td5 and aren't already on it, try carsales.com as I advertised mine there and sold it in 3 weeks.
    Good rates for a lead advert with 6 or 8 pics, cost around $60.00 from memory (or what's left of it!).

    Easo, as far as I know there only some very minor differences between the 07 and 08 Defenders - cosmetic really. At one stage the A pillar was being welded, not bolted and suffered fatigue cracking but has since reverted to the bolts.

    Also I have been told the fuel breather pipe has been relocated to avoid sucking water into the fuel tank (not a hard job). Again I was told (find out tonight for certain when we pick up the new 08 Deefer) that the sump pans are being changed over as well to avoid sump damage. I showed the dealership the Technical Service Bulletin on it and they were happy to change it if it hadn't been done already. Apart from Chawton White not being available, I can't think of any other differences off the top of my head.

    Alan, thanks for the advice. I will take some photos tonight and put in an ad.

    Just got a call from the aftermarket guys and the long range fuel tank is still a couple of weeks away. Looks like we will be getting most of the gear put on then. Bugger......

    I hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine after 1500 km.

    Apart from the sump pan and the tank breather location they have changed the ventilation and fan speed control sliders using a more "robust" design that is easier to get ones fingers around.

    Also there is no "waxoyl" treatment to the chassis which I guess isn't so much of a problem for people who don't drive on salted roads.

    Make sure the rear bolt holding the turbo heat shield is tight:

    Hi one_iota,

    Thanks for the great advice. I took the new Deefer in today to get it's aftermarket stuff put on (all except the Long Range fuel tank) so I will definitely get the locktite onto that bolt when we get the car back on Tuesday or thereabouts. The photo on that link was brilliant. Is it worth getting the car "waxoyled"?

    Also, I ended up having a 'slight' disagreement with the young guy there this morning as he was not willing to fit the cargo barrier where I wanted him to. It has been in the same spot on a '94 and 2000 Deefer so I could not see the problem. It is set up so it is half way along the cargo area, not butting up behind the rear seats as he suggested. That way we can snuggly fit the fridge and other heavier gear in the back area (including dogs when called for) and still have room to store stuff behind the back seats without having to stop and open the rear door all the time.

    Just because he hasn't seen that setup before doesn't mean it can't be done. Never mind, I will be taking in our old faithful to show him on Monday so he can see the 'impossible' for himself....

    You'll love it.

    I'd be interested to see pic's of your cargo barrier installation. Are you putting in a Milford in this way or something else. This would also overcome the seat anchor in the floor.

    Also I'm interested to learn if yours needs the sump pan changed out.

    Are you getting a bull bar fitted? If so which brand?

    Our original cargo barrier, which went from the '94 and into the 2000, was a Milford and was attached on the top and bottom. I will take some photos when I get home after work tonight and post them to show you. We were planning on leaving this in the current Defender when we sell it. The new one is supposed to be a Milford one too but he can't tell me much more than that. I have a funny feeling it will be a standard TD5 (pre-2007) one. Will see it on Monday I guess.

    When we picked up the car last night from the dealers they had not got around to changing the sump pan - even though I had talked to them about it on three separate occasions with my 'Technical Service Bulletin' and 'print out of damaged sumps' in hand - gotta love this forum!

    Turns out the Service manager (who I had talked to) went on a weeks leave and either didn't get around to organising it or if he checked the sump pan's part number he didn't tell anyone. It could be that the sump pan was already a new type straight from the UK (which is good), but if it needs replacing they said they would do it for me too (which is a pain in the a$$).

    We are getting an ARB bullbar fitted. If you can get a copy of the winter 08 edition of Western 4WDriver, it is like what is on the 130 ute on page 17 (with sidesteps and scrub bars), not what is on the Nat Luna Defender on the cover. Otherwise try this link to the ARB site for an idea.

    Hi dm_td5,

    I just got in and took a few quick shots of the cargo barrier. Apologies for the crappy photos! We have people coming over shortly and I was hoping to post these for you before they got here. The first couple of shots give you an idea where the barrier is situated in the cargo area (see 18kg dog food bag for scale = same size as a small Waeco fridge). The third and fourth shots show the hinged brackets and the amount of room behind the seat area (see first aid kit for scale). The last shot shows the side window view if the TD5. If you ignore the flash from the camera and look closely, you can see that the cargo barrier is in line with the join in the rear windows (remembering it is a 110). I hope this helps.

    Thanks for the pic's. Never considered this as a mounting option. My Tdi has it hard behind the seats and I was thinking the same if I can get something for the TDCi. Still not convinced, but I'll have to think it over.

    I'm a firm beliver of cargo barriers and having everything behind them (eg first aid box) after one did its job and saved our lives when I rolled my first Disco.
