Fixed and here was me thinking that a blown fuse was an indication of an electrical component failure

    Electrical yes, electronic no...

How many old vehicles burnt to the ground because of electrical problems..

And even old cars have electrics....

I'd trust my ECU controlled vehicle as much as if not more than an older non ECU vehicle...

And from the local guy, (back on topic)

He says he loves the new deefer after 6 months,

He says its a decent leap forwards to keep him happy...

But, consider this, ALL the 4wds since the multivalve Landcruiser are ECU controlled...

Does anyone question taking one of them on site at a mine? Nope...

How many discoveries have I seen in the Simmo? Hundreds...

Would you like to phone number of my mate from Birdsville Garage? He's seen 99% mechanical / electrical (NOT electronic) failures...

I can take a TD5 discovery... Rip out every sensor bar the timing pickup and drive that car across the simpson...

In limp home mode it will continue....

Everyone quotes the "One of these days it will kill someone" line.
It hasnt yet... Everyone carries a piece of electronics to prevent this issue (sat phone or HF) perhaps you still have a HF using valves in case a transistor fails?

And dont attack on the private school line, I live on the edge of a desert.

We dont have soccer mums and private schools like you refer to..

    We're a mining / steel making town
Your profile says Whyalla, not the edge of a desert. By Western Qld. standards this is an outer suburb of a capital city, close to dealerships and technical and recovery assistance. The point I try to make repeatedly on this forum is that the electronic control systems in mass produced modern automobiles are distinctly unreliable and have no place in an outback or remote area vehicle. Try living in Winton, or Boulia, or Cunnamulla, or Thargomindah, with NO dealership, NO spare parts backup in town, NO mobile 'phone coverage far from major towns. I had one of my electronic failures between Davenport and Coorabulka, whilst doing my cousin's mail contract. He was in hospital in Townsville. NO dialysis in Western Qld. NO roadside service either. Look at the maps. See how far I was from help. I now have a County-Isuzu with NO electronics. UHF and a tow from station workers got me out of this or I would have had to wait for someone to think that the mailman had not arrived and come looking. They usually do. They don't look for tourists who are not expected. As to the 747, they usually have multiple systems made to a higher standard than the sole car electronic system which is designed by accountants. If an aeroplane holds me up roadside and I survive I will record the failure on AULRO.
