    As a pom flying to Darwin in November, Im using Quantas...

    Further, weve not heard a single word against Quantas in the News over here, so whatever their problems they cant be that bad that they havent gone international.

    Sounds like a lot of localised press hype to me.

    I agree again.

    But its more the holes in planes, things falling off, etc etc that are a concern. Eventually something's going to happen where they just simply cannot keep the plane in the air (i don't know, a wing or two falling off for example ).

    That on it's own is a relief and I do know a couple of Qantas 747 pilots. I'd trust them any day. Tell your wife to enjoy the flight as she is in the hands of the best Pilots in the world.

    My folks just flew to Europe with Qantas and I use them every month for work (no other choice) and neither of us have any extra nervousness because we are using them.

    I still believe they are one of, if the best airline in the world. Now if only their domestic flight hosties were a bit hotter...

    In my lifetime I have flow 90% of my flights on Qantas. That is a lot. I've flown over a million miles.

    In the other 10% of the flights I have had three emergency landings at non-scheduled airports. None of these were anything worse than a light has come on so policy is we divert to the nearest. But Qantas has never needed to do that in all the time flying with them. I've also never been met me a complete airport set of fire engines with blue lights going on a Qantas flight. This is a spectacular sight when it is not your plane. I've also been circling over Heathrow for a couple of hours when a Virgin Atlantic plane decided to land without undercarriage so it took them a while to clean up the mess.

    When you look at most of the issues that have been reported recently for Qantas over half of them are normal everyday things which are not reported.

    Statistically you are more likely to be injured on your way to or from the airport in a car. Which has happened to me...

    I will say it again...slowly this time...

    Emirates Pilots ARE the cream of Qantas...the very best that big dollars can buy. Every flight I have caught within the last year was captained by an Australian.

    I fly overseas regularly and in my opinion, I have noticed the standard of Qantas's in-flight service has been going down the chute. Symptomatic of an airline that is struggling in a very competitive world market.

    I am a [non current] pilot as well as having lived in Asia for many years.

    Qantas safety for me is not a major issue and they are much better than many in our region. That said, planes are mechanical devices and the more flights made the more certain it is that there will eventually be an accident and every flight has a risk. The only bit of bull**** in the whole equation is the local Engineers claiming that they can do no wrong while the overseas ones can do no right. Both are quite capable of making mistakes .... just as Land Rover Mechanics can and do as these forums from time to time attest.

    The problems Qantas is having are realistically normal, though an O2 cylinder going off the way that one did is unacceptable and just down right slack of maintenance.
    All that aside it is only being leaked and put in the spotlight to try and get the maintenance back on Australian soil only, which I am in favour of. These types of incidents do happen to aircraft serviced in Australia, its just that when it happens in that circumstance everyone wants to keep it quiet.
    I am 50/50 with Qantas, their staff often are arrogant and ignorant half the time and then I have had staff bend over backwards to help, go figure. Bad supervisory management I put this down to.
    Ansett had the best staff on the ground and in the air and good management practicies as far as customer relations went, maybe not good fiscal management though.

    I suggest that you could visit some of the tourist advice sites on travel such as trip advisor which serve a similar service for travellers as this site does for Land Rover owners. There are far worse stories about airlines from other countries except, as they do not concern an australian company they are not reported here in the newspapers. I took a flight in China back in the late 70s and the plane took off while people were still getting to their seats. That made the tardy ones move!
    Actually I think Qantas has lost a plane, (long before my time), back in the 1930s in Queensland and another was shot down in the early days of WW2. Stand corrected if wrong as it was years ago when I read their history.
    However the record is far better than the other airlines that fly in here.
    there is a site but I do not have its address now, that showed some very interesting videos of planes landing which would make you think twice about flying. One of the better videos was of a Malaysian flight landing at the old Hong Kong airport and the wing scrapped the runway. Should be compulsory viewing before you fly!!
