Have I personally met them? On each flight...No. But the voice that comes over the intercom and gives the in-flight brief and purports to be the captain, lets me know they are 'Fair Dinkums'.

I have a mate who I often stay with who is the Director of Security and I have socialised at his place in Dubai with a number of the ex Qantas pilots who fly for them.....and guess what? They are having a fair giggle at where the management of Qantas has taken what was once a very credible airline.

The reason why you 'cannot see a Muslim having "Infidels" flying their planes...is because.......you don't know the facts.

If you travel you might understand the part that expats (especially Australians) are playing in the Middle East and other parts of the world.....it is a big world out there....and not as scary as you might have convinced yourself.

Well not a pilot but a mate's daughter (Christian) worked as a stewardess with them for a year, no problem. Some Muslim countries are quite liberal.

I wouldn't have any particular safety fears with Qantas as I thiknk they're certainly better than most. However, they're not perfect either, and some others are good. Singapore, Japan and Thai Air are quality, for instance.
Qantas are also very expensive compared with other airlines. For instance, Air Asia tickets were about 60% of Qantas prices for a recent comparison. And I've lost count of the number of Aussie accents I've heard making announcements on airlines in Asia - our blokes are everywhere.

I recall seeing a report that Qantas, founded in 1922 is the second oldest airline in the world after KLM and its record of fatalities from plane crashes is one passenger in New Guinea in 1951 and a pilot and two passengers in Western Queensland in 1927. Maybe someone could verify this.

Qantas operating standards seem to have been consistantly better than most other airlines. Probably an element of good luck too with no serious accidents due to factors beyond their control, eg like the Concorde that crashed after being damaged on the takeoff run by something that fell off another plane. Or in the Canary Islands when a KLM 747 on takeoff run that went through a Pan American 747 in the wrong place - apparently the worst ever aviation accident.

Not necessarily true - many of them are what was left over after Ansett!

The reality about the country of origin, they may have been trained by Qantas or Lufthansa but their in-service training is at the behest of the airline.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

There is something ironic about Land Rover drivers worried about the reliability of Qantas aeroplanes

Putting aside the oxygen bottle exploding incident out of Honkers the other week, every "incident" since has been a media beat up.

What may have seemed scary about the rupture of the 747 was the subsequent decompression and emergency decent - nonetheless the plane was never out of control or in danger of falling apart. The rapid descent can be a wild ride but done deliberately and practiced regularly.

I would not hesitate flying Qantas.

you need to remember some of those incidents are several years old, so over all flying is still very safe.
sure the customer service standard can leave a bit to be desired on some airlines but at the end of teh day you will land tired after a long flight with the worse experiance being teh airport transistions
