Sydney to Uganda & back by 2A

We're planning to spend 6 months overlanding through Central and Southern Africa by Land Rover in the future.

We already have a nice 2A SWB - we could upgrade it and enjoy the challenge of driving a 40 year old car from Sydney to Perth, then onto South Africa for a circular trip to Uganda and home again.

    Some technical questions:
    1. Can I fit a station wagon's fuel tank to the back of my 88" diesel to give extended range?
    2. Will the 2A's alternator cope with a dual battery setup to run a fridge? Will anyone actually install a dual battery setup for a 2a without laughing at me?
    3. What upgrades would you consider absolutely necessary for a 2a?
I have an overdrive already and I don't mind the ride at the moment with the current springs. Can you get a locker for the rover diff at the back?
    4. Am I crazy thinking such an old bus can safely make this trip?

    1. No
    2. 2a did not have an alternator originally, so a bit hard to say. Possibly it is an S3 alternator, but could be anything. If doing a lot of driving, especially if not at night, a standard S3 alternator should work.

Dual battery setup should be easy with the S2a, so I can't see anyone laughing at you - only problem will be where to put the second battery.

    3. Secure locking and fuel cap lock(s), bonnet lock. As you suggest, extra fuel tankage would be good, and the major step would be to fit the larger late S3 tank, after that a LH tank as in the army S2a. No other modifications are essential except, if it is an early one, fit a temperature gauge. There are lots of mdifications you could make, but particularly for this type of trip, there could be advantages in keeping everything as standard as possible - more likely to find parts.

    4. No. Just make sure everything is in good shape - the main problem is that it is 40-50 years old.

No, but you can custom fit about a 40l tank there

yes it will. Kiss, if you dont have the second tank under the passanger seat theres room in there for 2 batteries and you can have on one the tray that lives on the right hand side of the engine bay next to the oil bath airfilter.

No upgrades required, get all the existing gear into good order and your set, fit a winch if your worried about getting stuck.

We are planning a similar thing for when we "retire", and my thoughts are that a SWB is just not big enough to accommodate all the fuel/gear/water you'd like to have on such a trip.

It can be done and is has been done, but SWBs always seem to end up overloaded with gear on the roof giving a high centre of gravity etc. Without a load on I have no doubts the SII would make it though. There are lots of old landies out in East Africa to cannibalise for parts if you had to. It'll be an excellent drive!

Our tack has been to get a 130 and start fitting that out......
