Thread: Hypothetically speaking... Moving to Sydney???

There are stables in the city at the RAS and Centennial Park, and at Randwick, I've seen backyard stables in Glebe- High density inner city. Dunno what the cost is, but I'm guessing not cheap. The people I've known who have horses and live in the city keep them out of town.

If you can, get a job with a UK company paying in Sterling, gives you currency leverage and the option of moving back.

If you're working in the CBD, find somewhere to live so that you can catch a ferry to work - Balmain, Hunters Hill, Manly, Parramatta.

If you live North of the Spit bridge, or south of Taren Point, or west of Parramatta you will never see the centre of the city, they're all worlds unto themselves. If you live east of the CBD you will never go further in any direction than the CBD. Gross generalisation, but close enough to be true.

Sorry, I've got no idea where people from the North Shore go - North Sydney to Hornsby.

I live in Leichhardt, family of five, uni student income of less than you can possibly imagine.

That's out the window tonight, you can see about 7Kms to Gladesville Bridge. It's almost as nice in daylight.

My cousin lives in Surry Hills behind the opera rehearsal rooms, much more pleasant industrial noise than power tools, and walking distance to everything.

There are a couple of nice places to live in Sydney, and a couple of them are affordable.

Recommended western suburbs?

I'm biased! I live at in Emu Plains, at the base of the Blue Mountains. I'm less than 1km from the M4 Motorway to the city - same to the highway heading west. When I used to drive to work (at Paddington 60km away), it took, usually 90 mins each way. Much longer on Friday afternoons. However, I had free parking in the basement at work.

Why did I choose there. Well, we had just moved back to Sydney from Western Australia. I couldn't afford Paddington where I worked so we decided we had to live within walking distance of a railway station (forget going to work by bus!). Strathfield (next railway stop) was too expensive. Ditto, the next stop, Parramatta. We knew we'd never live at the next stop of Blacktown (30 years on, still a wise decision). That left Penrith (the next stop) or Emu Plains (the first stop on the Blue Mountains line).

We bought in Penrith, equidistant from Penrith and Emu Plains so I could walk to either if I wished. I wanted to travel by interurban trains as they had limited stops 4-5 on a trip to the city rather than the many stops of the suburbans. And the seats are more comfortable.

Even in this area, there are some places I wouldn't consider owing to access, e.g., Glenmore Park which is relatively new but has only two roads in/out and it's a nightmare in peak periods.

A nice area within easy(ish) reach of our fundemental requirements are far more important than the beach.

Before I came here I asked similar questions about where to live and I've ended up in Stanmore. It's got all the facilities I need: a bottle shop, pizza hut, more bottle shops, a kebab shop, bottle shops, a rail stataion, bottle shops, supermarkets (nearby), bottle shops, easy access to an arterial route to the city, bottle shops, restaurants, bottle shops and I'm not too far from two highly recommended specialist Land Rover mechanics. Oh, and bottle shops.

Places like Newtown and Enmore are quite studenty but have decent night life and facilities and there are some nice houses round there too (it's not all just aimed at students). Glebe, Forest Lodge, Leichhardt, Balmain, Rozelle and Camperdown are also quite alright.

Kings Cross, Surry Hills and Redfern are a bit more erm...well, think about what Kings Cross in London was like 10 years ago.

Going East from the CBD, Darlinghurst, Rushcutters Bay, Paddington are alright.

The benefit of all the above is thet they are close enough to the city to not need public transport if you get yourself a bike or don't mind a bit of a walk. I cycle to North Sydney every day - it is about 40 mins which is quicker than getting the bus and train. I'm only about 40 minute walk from the CBD too.

Note: all the above are my opinions of the different areas based on what I have seen and experienced and what friends who live there say.

Quite correct. There is no need to go further. Eastern Suburbs are my choice of where to live in Sydney if I had to return. Double Bay to Maroubra and no further west/south than Dowling St. and Anzac Parade.

East is where it all happens.

You do need A$2,000,000 at least for a good class of home though.

I Recon you should go John no matter the weather or place you live , then you can invite me and mrs BAS for a long holiday loool.

And then of course you could be one of my Australian tuning dealers

It would actualy be a shame to see you go as we have had a good year together ,Mrs BAS and i would miss you and Mrs John.
Ohh and who will do my new products art work now if you are 8hrs in a different time zone !!
