Hmmmm - listened to a few exchanges on VKS while we were away with people who had 'premium' or gold cover being told it was still going to cost them ~$8000 for recovery and they had to agree to this before the truck would leave the depot.

It's a different sort of recovery in Paddington, usually known as a 'recovery party' They use slings rather than snatches.

Something among the junk I normally carry is a slide hammer tyre bead breaker - with a hexagonal bar, not round one which makes the direction of the end of it more controllable.
It is occasionally used for its intended purpose - to break the bead before removing tyres but more often for other things. Largely as a substitute for a crowbar for digging, levering and as a battering ram etc. Is often handy in recovery operations.

Just thought of another item which I have not checked if anyone else has listed is wire cutters that will cut fencing wire. It can occasionally be expedient to use some wire in recovery operations or necessary to cut it out of the way.

It's a good question! It would depend on where you're going & how far off the beaten track you want to go. If you're after a challenge you'll probably need it, but if you only drive where you know you'll get through easily you won't (more than likely)
