Ok as i drive around alot for my job i see alot of 4wd nissans, toyotas, in fact all makes of off roaders , seem to have somthing in common . People with cargo barriers put those Emergency Hammer Things (as seen below ) zip tired to the rear cargo barrier
Now correct me if i am wrong but are they not desgigned for you to use to help you get out of a car by smashing a window, or cutting your seat belt As said on a web site selling them

SO why the Bl**dy hell do people put them on the boot side of the rear cargo barrier , where you can't get to it from inside of the car, i have trained my dogs well but hey not that well .
So is it just me that thinks that people that do this are morons or not

I think it is incase people lock themselves in the boot. With a barrier, its like a mini hot prison!!

I think you are right there mate, i've also seen lots of stuff that does'nt make sense - but i've put it down to the fact that i drive a 'fender and it does'nt matter anyway.
In this particular instance it won't help them much in that position in case of an accident - but then they do drive "different" brand 4X4's and in so doing think differently. Personally i think that would go well smack bang in the middle of the roof where everybody can get to it easily - problem is if you have small kids, or your mate's kids....... those hammers can ruin a friendship quick smart
well those hammers were designed by the West German Federal Police on the autobhans for cutting seat belts and smashing windows to get people out of wrecks. I bought mine from McEwens in Bourke St Melbourne in the 1980's and have transferred it to each new car l drive they have long needle pins to stick into your transmission tunnel carpet by the front seats so l dont see why people are tying them to cargo barriers.
Also have useful tool for cleaning out window washer jets with long thin needle
Those tools come with the cargo barrier.
As suggested, they are to get out of the rear in case of emergency.
Don't forget many 4wd's will have a set of seats behind the cargo barrier.

As already stated by GregTD5 they are fitted to the cargo barrier when it's installed.
Probably an ADR requirement for when some moron has an accident with someone illegally behind the cargo barrier ?
If the cargo barrier manufacturer didn't fit it someone would probably sue them when this happened........
