just a query i love the sound of a landy v8, but just want to know how good the eletical side of the motor coupes with river crossing compared to a desiel, should i awlays have some wd 40 or crc with e when i do a crossing

Not so bad if you use a bra over the front end. But that's a bit inconvenient to carry and install. Better to have a diesel, better fuel economy too.

mate - have a look at discoweb.org. They only have bent 8 petrols in the US and the photo gallery attests to some amazing river crossings (talking over the bonnet well and truly). If you search there are threads about how to do it without stopping the petrol motor. The D1 is the one that requires a bit of TLC with the dizzy (albeit high up) - a latex glove with the ends cut of the fingers for the leads is recommended. Good spray with lanotec etc and your away.
The D2 is much better set up - the coil packs are very high and tucked up on top of and behind the motor. You would be hard pressed causing problems, particularly if you sprayed the plugs and lead end before going.

Yeah Modern Rover V8's (and engines in general) are a lot better than the older ones, and a lot less prone to water stopping them.
It really depends on how deep you want to go!!
My truck is a V8, absolutly love it. If you keep good plugs and leads on the vehicle and know how to drive it river crossing they arn't too bad. I have had water over the bonnet of mind and she kept going! Why would you want to go through deep water anyway there is the initial problem of being washed away or being trapped, then there's the statermotor, alternator wheel bearing and electrics that are getting wet as well (plus any where else it gets in) My theory is if a petrol engine stop in a river crossing once you get it out it will go again, if a desiel stop better get that tilt tray in. My truck is running on gas and I know that there wouldn't be too many Isuzu's that would be as cheep to run!
The main thing as Freestyler has said is propper maintenance (new leads and plugs as old leads can cross fire and older plugs draw more current causing leads to break down faster) and all should be ok.
Some one else also said to use lanotech and a rubber glove before the crossing which is also really good but whats even better is a spray on rubber from a company called Momar.
It costs about $40 a can but the can will do probably 4 or 5 cars at least so if you get together with a few folks it is pretty cheap but it actually puts a flexible rubber coating over what ever you spray it on.
I use it on spray equipment where electric soloniods are wet all the time and the connections normally would rust away or corrode within 12 months due to chemicals etc but with this stuff I havnt had to replace them in 2 years and they are still working faultlessly.
The thing to remember with both petrol and diesel is if it gets into the engine itself, your on a truck as it bends stuff, diesel worse than petrol due to compression ratio's but if you have eveything sealed up, a diesel will run under water as long as it can get air into it and exaust out all day where as no matter how much you try and water proof a petrol engine there will be something that doesnt like water which will fail eventually.
As far as newer cars are better than older ones, I have found a lot of newer cars (more V6 Rodeo and V6 Hilux than landy though) really dont like any water getting near thier bits just as much as the older ones, just they have better seals on things but they still have to be in good nick or else it is all for nothing.
Go buy a Diesel with a good snorkle when your old and boring like me and you dont care what your bus sounds like any more.
Mine sounds like 1 continuous long fart while under load but it gets me there so Im happy with it but I do love the sound of a Rover V8![]()
I have a V8 and tend to stay out of deep water these days as my door seals leak faster than a sieve.I don't have any trouble driving through water as long as i drop in slow enough to minimize splash then accelerate to create a bow wave.I spray lanolin on the leads and dizzy(I think i will check out the stuff Mcrover suggests).

My mate is a bit of a devo, his life not mine, therefore his problem. I admit that I got a tad concerned as we pulled up next to the riverbank and I saw him pull the big tub of Vaseline out of his cubby box. Images of Billy Bob, canoes, piggy squeals and banjos went flying though my head. How very relieved was I when I saw him liberally coat everything electrical on his V8.
