As some people might have read in the Camera section, I was out last night and whilst standing, viewing some photos on my camera, an intoxicated person [a close friend of a relative] poured a glass of orange juice onto the camera.
I immediately dried off the exterior and took steps to prevent damage, but the aftermath today is that the camera has been reduced to a mere paperweight.
I am pretty dark because I had taken less than 45 photographs since purchasing it, and it had a MSRP of $599.95.
As for the advice I seek - I don't think it is at all right that I have to wear the cost of this. I'm inclined to contact the person and inform them of the situation, and ask specifically what their intentions are regarding a solution.
What would you do?
Send em the bill / quote from a repair shop.
will your household insurance cover it?
our little boy threw the wifes mobile phone down the toilet
As you can imagine it was a slightly smaller paperweight.
I took the back off remover the battery and sim then stood it on the window sill for a few days.
turned it on and it worked.
I have also had many computer parts given to me covered in pepsi, coffee, water etc etc etc
if you turn it off quickly and rinse it in water then let it dry for a LONG time you have a 50-50 chance it will still work
you can also douse it in cleaning alcohol (isopropolene or something like that) after its bath, might help.
you could also return it to the store and as for a replacement as it "just went off".
Saying all that yes your relative Should offer to get it fixed without you having to ask.
Although I think the person should just cough the cash up if they can I would be tempted to inform the relative who it is the friend of before taking further steps. Maybe you should get a repair quote also. However they will prob. just say buy a new one?
Anyway, what ever happens I hope you get a working camera!
Just in case you need to take it further, were there any witnesses?

I did give it a good cleaning with electrical contact cleaner, but the juice has "dried" and basically gummed up all the buttons on it. The power switch is stuck solid! The internals will be ruined.
Ron - there were witnesses - let me know how I could take it further.
Thanks for all the replies - sounds like I should get the repair quote first.
As Ron said were there any witnesses? If there were contact the guy and inform them of the result of their actions and if they are unwilling to do anything seek legal action. Maybe a visit to the police station to see if there is anything they can do, alot of the time even though they cant do much a phone call from them will be enough to scare the person into paying up. Hey mate, I would have to concur with Xavie first....speak to your relative first and work through them. I would have thought in general you wouldnt have to be taking these steps as relly/ close mate should be offering to cough up the dough to sort,
