    Hey Dawg,

Check out the thread "cyclone at Narangba". It wasn't a storm, I was in the middle of it.
They're pretty bad, particularly The Gap, Ashmore, Keppera, Narangba, Mt Tamborine, lots of roofless houses, or houses with trees embedded.
Gum trees all over and through the place, Hail damage, still lots of powerlines down and about 20,000 houses still without power and now they're saying the drinking water is contaminated.

it was a good 'un alright

Give us a hoi when your over here.

    G'day Dawg

In old time farmer's terms, "it was a real gully raker"

we missed the main force of it but we got 66 mm in about 1 hr.

At the moment we have light/medium rain, and there is rain and storms forcast for Wed, Thurs, Channel 7 was just reporting that both the Prime Minister and the Premier are at the moment touring the worst areas, mainly the Gap, Ashgrove, and surrounds, through to Redcliffe area, The PM's family home is in the Brisbane inner south eastern area, probably 10-15 klm SE of the worst hit areas, so he would know the suburbs well.

The contaminated water worry is that the roof blew off the reservoir, and then fell back in, with the resulting bird droppings & other rubbish falling into the water, so the Health Dept is advising people to boil water before use.

    cheers

I wonder how much of the damage to powerlines is caused by Energex not clearing the lines. I notice here in the Central Coast that Energy Australia seem quite diligent. And seeing some of the deroofed houses , one wonders to what standard they are built. At least On Magnetic Island everything has to be Cat4.

Does everyone forget that Brisbane is prone to these storms every so often? I grew up in Brisbane and clearly remember some doozies.

There was one in 1966 that came from the south and destroyed everything in its path. I was at Eagle farm at the Department of Civil Aviation warehouse and poked my head out the door to see pallets at 100 Feet.

Around the same time there was a tornado which broke off every tree on Tooheys Mountain and deroofed the Mt Gravatt high school, as well as all the houses around Tooheys Mountain.

To me it's like seeing people rush in to buy houses in Jindalee, Chelmer, Fig Tree Pocket etc., after seeing houses there completely under water for days in 1973 or was it 4. Can you yet get a flood map of Brisbane?

I think the government gets into denial and exacerbates problems by slacking on maintenance of powerlines, drains etc.
    Regards Philip A

The lines that seem to have received the most attention from the storm were not overgrown with trees. In fact there are no trees underneath them. But plenty of very large trees were felled nearby and some of them went across the lines.

Well the Local Gov. has stoped people from triming thir large trees!

The same as a lot of places stoped burning of in winter.

Here Energy Australia knock off every overhanging or even potentially near branch not just underneath.
True some will fall but during the Newcastle disaster in May last year which was MUCH worse than this event we only lost power for about 6 hours even though several BIG Blackbutts dropped in the immediate vicinty of my street.

Usually Gum trees drop radial branches which twist off in the wind.

Im on the clean up crew for the gap...

the ADF has laid on something like 100 trucks from 2t-15T capacity and over 700 personell.

I counted 32 chippers, 4 excavators, 2 stump grinders, who knows how many bob cats, chainsaws and tree lopping mobs in the 4 hours we were at it today...

my current rumourus orders include "rest of the week", "Bring sleeping gear"

the truck I was co-ee for shifted about 8 tons of downed trees, from 3 yards....
