Another great example is a guy I know who has spent 16 years in the local rural fire service. He donates at minimum 40 hours a week at the shed not including call outs.

He recently kicked his son out of home at 15 years of age because the son wasn't relating well to the family. The son did drugs because he had no one to turn to for help and it was the only thing that made him feel any better and zone out from how bad he was feeling. When ever the kid was having a hard time the father left the hosue and went to the fire shed.

That father should have left the brigade long ago to be with his son and not take the top job but he didn't. He now is seen as such a great person and did all he could for his son but his son is a "lost cause" now. And that's such a cop out. The father never did anything he should have to protect his own child and all he did was look out for himself.

In 10 years when that kid is still doing drugs and homeless he'll have his father to thank for never taking care of him and showing him how to deal with the harashness of life in a healthy manner. It is now about a person having excuses but about people need ing to learn the basics of life before they can grow as a person and deal with the day to day.

And although this is only one persons story it is everywhere and these are the people who are on the streets.

If someone asks me for money for train fare, I just ask them where they're going and offer to accompany them to the station to buy a ticket. If they want money for food, I ask them what they want to eat and offer to get a bite with them.

It's interesting how often they lose interest.

Occasionally (very occasionally) there is someone genuine and you do a good deed, but this approach helps weed out the addicts. And not giving them money for drugs is in turn doing them a good deed - even if they don't know it.

And another thing - it helps to remember that people don't just get addicted to stuff without a reason. And addiction is just that, an addiction. It takes away your dignity and any idea that you should "get off the stuff". Anyone who can't get through a stressful situation without a stiff drink to "take the edge off" should think about trying to break that habit before passing judgement on a hopeless chromer. It's all just a matter of degrees.

Most of the time homeless people that are doing drugs/alcohol are only into it because they are homeless, some may have become homeless because of Drug addiction/alcohol/Gambling, but most of the time they become homeless from losing jobs etc and then get onto drugs and alcohol.
