    fraser island vehicle choice advice

    Hi all,

A couple of fraser island questions for the experienced as I have not been there.

My sister and her boyrfriend are going to fraser and staying at the king fisher resort. They are determained to hire a fwd to look around the island while there rather than tours. The choices are Patrol or Jimny. In terms of price they are unexpectantly very similar apparently.

1 What would be better on the island patrol or jimny? I would have thought the Jimny due to the weight advantage.

2 What are the inland tracks like? Is there any other fwding problems for a Jimny on the island other than sand driving?

    Thanks in advance.

Jimny ground clearance could be a problem further north, especially ngkala rocks bypass, more so if they are inexperienced. Would go for the cruiser especially if theres not much price difference.

Having said that I know of a bloke who used to take a fully loaded subaru everywhere the bigger 4wds could go.

Depends a lot on condition of the tracks at the time they are going.

If they are sticking around the centre and south of the island a Jimny will be fine....could be a bit of fun actually. The driving isnt that hard around most places, but some of the northern inland tracks get a bit bumpier.

I imagine there would be a price difference and personally I wouldnt spring for a cruiser when a jimny will do most of what they want. Cheaper to replace if they wreck it too!

The Suzuki will likely be cheaper to hire but the Patrol will ride a lot better.

    The inland tracks are rough........

As far as I'm aware no hire vehicle is allowed past Champagne Pools so you won't have to worry about that.

I was on the Island last week and they have had some good rain. Generally it is quite easy going. I'd probably go the jimmny If you run out of clearance try and drive out of the ruts

The boarded track up out of Kingfisher Bay will be a challenge when last there it was very washed out....the defender handled it well though
