    Is that rain I hear?

A friend at work relayed to me a recent trip to the Victorian High Country.

    A pleasent weekends 4wding planned. It's the 22/23rd Nov.

They head on up Dingo Hill track and then camp along the Caledonia River. Those of you who know that area know how pretty it is.

Some late spring Snow was spotted.

What a lovely weekend it was turning out to be. As they tucked themselves in on the Sat Night. The pitter-patter of rain gently sent them all off to sleep. (Not to mention a couple of late night ports!)

It changed from a pitter-patter to a constant rain.

(42 mm at SALE and about 60mm in the high country).

John awoke and wandered down to the river crossing for a look.

(note: This is the same spot as Pic # 1 )

Ummm....We got to drive across that?

Some research and discussion umongst the group, Navaras, Nissans, Tojo's all well equipped but not so sure of that flow rate.

The river was up 2 feet and flowing dirty and fast.

I think the best bet is to wait a day.

    So Monday morning came around.

Nervously John wandered down to the river. It was up another 300mm

    Oh bugger.

OH well, We better get on with it.

So equipped with snatch straps trailing the leader went first....

One drowned Navara - reserected after a bit of injector work.

No permanent damage, a few wet carpets, sweaty plams....and some big Grins when they made it!

By about 11pm that night they managed to extract themsleves and recover to Heyfield via Licola.

    Sounds like a great weekend.

It is REALLY nerve wracking being the first through obstacles. Normally everyone just files through after and you and wonder what all the fuss was about.

Wonder what was going through the third guys head after seeing the first 2 and the second one drown. Makes a cool pic though.

    That's serious water!

In the old imperial days, I developed what I called the 'Factor 10' for assessing swift flowing (greater than 3ft/sec) water crossings - I haven't bothered figuring out the metric version!

The 'Factor 10' was arrived at by multiplying the depth (in feet) by the velocity (in feet/second) - anything greater than 10 was considered undrivable (and usually unwadable also).
eg. 1 ft deep and 3ft/sec - OK
    2ft deep and 5ft/sec - OK
    2ft deep and 6ft/sec - NO GO

I'm pretty sure the pictured crossing would have exceeded the 'Factor 10' rating and I would have been enjoying another day or so in the bush. I think 'they' were very lucky to get out OK.

    Nice pictures BTW.
