Just read the headlines about the police shooting a 15yo boy armed with 2 meat cleavers. Pretty tragic outcome.
How come they don't have something a bit less lethal than firearms, like Tazers? Even if you ended up in hospital from being shocked, you'd still be in a better state than with a gunshot wound.
Also, how come they would shoot him in the chest and not just go for his leg or something less terminal than heart/lungs/vital organs etc? Why not just "wing" him?
Anyway - bad for everyone. His parents. The poor blokes who had to shoot. Family & friends, etc.
Respect your position, but...
Used a handgun when you're under the pump? Believe me, it is NOT really easy to "hit a leg".
The issue's much more complex than that.

In hindsight alternative actions are easier said than done.
As a matter of fact they did use pepper spray twice on the boy with nil effect.
So when are the riots starting?
(like in Greece!)

Second that. Most people are unable to distinguish what between happens in Hollywood and what happens in reality.
Hollywood: Good cop with crappy handgun shoots out kneecap and then disarms agressor whilst sipping a latte. No sweat.
Reality: Good cop with crappy handgun is ****ting bricks, eyes are wide and they try and decide wether they are going to kill someone, or be killed themselves - good cop pulls trigger and spends next month in counselling.
~alternatively~
Good cop shoots kid in leg - misses. Good cop murdered by angry kid with two knives who then stabs innocent witnesses. Public demand to know why officer did not use weapon to defend themselves and public safety.
I fail to see the issue. It is TRAGIC that the kid died, but if you try and knife coppers, that will happen.
From what I am hearing here, they didn't just "pepper spray him twice" THEY EMPTIED TWO WHOLE CANS OF OC ON HIM.![]()

It's a very sad outcome and I'm sure being tazered would have been a better outcome if police had that option, but i do think the following facts are relevant.
The cops had already used 2 cans of capsicum spray on the kid; and
3 cops all felt it necessary, at the same time, to discharge their firearms in his direction.
If 3 cops all felt it was appropriate to shoot him, he must have been acting in a very irrational manner and been considered a very serious threat.
Police are trained to aim at the largest target as apparantly people are not very accurate when shooting hand guns under pressure at a moving target.
Well I do agree with all of the above comments, and that if you try and go a policeman with a cleaver you are on borrowed time.
Maybe because he was only 15 it just seemed worse - just a kid. Bad decision to pick up those knives.....
Tragic, to be sure, however also relevent is the legal aspect, 'winging' someone is a legal minefield, lawsuits for rights abuse, lawsuits for grief, suffering, loss of mobility, etc, etc.
Yes, law enforcement is trained to 'shoot to kill', as this is the point, if that is the level of force required, then death is the outcome, but do not for a minute believe that the officers are not 'schooled' in the legal angles of 'winging' as well.
The old saying, 'dead men don't talk' is absolutely true.
