On Friday afternoon I left Fremantle for the long trip to Melbourne. All up I traveled just under 3600kms in around 50 hours, making it to Millgrove on Sunday in time for dinner. The drive was no where as desolete and isolated as I was expecting. And the Nullabor Plain was quite a dissapointment in regards to size.
Everybody on the roads were really friendly and courteous. The truckies were absolute ledgends. I slipped streamed a couple just before and over the Nullabor. This saved me having to work the Disco hard as it didn't like to run on Petrol in the extreme heat. It was over 40 degrees out there in places.
Most traffic coming in the other direction gave a wave, and I thought it would be finally time that I recieved some Land Rover waves. I was wrong. I past over 20 Landies, most being D1's and D2's, 3 D3's and 2 Range Rover Sports. And I got a total of 2 waves. I was a little dissapointed.
The biggest surprise of the trip was the number of Police on the roads. In WA and SA (about 3000kms) I saw a total of 3 Police cars on the road. The first 300kms in Victoria I spotted 4 marked cars, 4 unmarked cars and 2 roadside speed cameras. And the roads are by far the worst in Victoria than the other states. I think that the Vic government needs to spend some money on the roads instead of Policing them, this might even help to bring the road toll down.
Since I've been here I've seen quite a few nice looking Landies around. I spotted a really nice Range Rover Classic Tray Back on Canterbury Rd Kilsyth yesterday afternoon. Also saw a nice looking 130 parked in Mt Evelyn.
Now just have to get ready for the return trip in the New Year. I will post some photo's when I get home if anybody is interested.
And you did this trip with or without Airconditioning??
There are caves to see in the middle of the Nullabor ... Did you stop at some of the turn offs to have a view of the cliffs?
Safe travels .. Mike![]()
I managed to get the Air Conditioning sorted out. That is why i didn't end up leaving untill Friday afternoon. It would have been a killer to do it without.
It was just me and the dog on the way over, so I didn't stop other than to sleep or fuel. The wife is driving back with me so we will stop along the way on the return trip.
There would have been the usual crazy Japanese bicycle rider on view in the Nullabor ..... Many of these?? ... Stop and offer them water // good for a conversation break

Well we got back early this morning. We left Thursday morning and made it back to Perth with only the one stop for sleep. We manged to drive from Melbourne to Ceduna on the first day, around 1600km and then we drove from Ceduna to Perth the following day, around 2000km. The Disco flew along and did me proud. She's up for some new leads/plugs etc as she's started to develop a slight miss under load in the heat. But other than that we had a dream run. It was nice and cold on the Nulabor, even to the point where SWMBO had to put her jacket on when we fueled up at the Nulabor roadhouse.
As promised some pix for those that are interested.
There are not alot here, I would have liked to stop a little more but SWMBO gets motion sickness, and while sleeping I pushed on as hard and as far as I could. I would have liked to get some shots of Iron Knob, but I had the camera packed away and couldn't get to it without pulling everything out.
This is from the trip over, the first night
We managed to get some 4WD'ing in at Toolangi, I got seriously bogged much to the delight of a mate in his new Triton
This is how we travelled most of the way home
Some sights while I was driving,
Some of the lookouts,
And lastly a couple of random shots,
