If it goes on patchy it will stay patchy, i would let it fully dry and rub it back and repaint tomorrow, sounds like you had too much pressure if the gun was bubbling and farting. Are you using a suction or gravity fed gun ?

it was gravity feed and it was lack of pressure I had run out of air.....

Cant paint the car tomorrow as I need the car to get to work

Hey Dullbird, do what my mates do....

Do all the prep work/labour intensive stuff yourself then call in an expert to do the painting. Cheap and very effective

I really wanted to learn it my self.....I'm not frightened of getting dirty just hate a shabby job..


update I just did my 6th coat which I'm assuming should be my last coat WITH the regulator on the gun and oh my god what a difference I dont think the job would of been half as shabby if this bloody thing was on in the first place

if i do decided to take the bonnet off again in a couple of days to re-do do I have to rub it right back to the start?

Just rub it back so it is all just "scrubbed" (youve taken any sheen off the shinny stuff and the rough out of the dry crappy stuff.

Then apply another 2 or 3 coats.

What paint are you using, sounds like acrylic?

If it is Acrylic then lay it on nice and wet (just hefore it starts running) then give it a light rub with 1200 and hit it with about 4 or 5 coats of clear and leave it for 2 or 3 weeks then give it a good cut and buff and it will look great.

It is pretty hard to stuff up acrylic paint job as you can just rub out runs and dry spots etc and the clear coat gives you plenty of shine.

Enamel and 2 pac are a bit different, it has to be good off the gun.

Agreed! Acrylic is the way to go.

Just get your color even and hit it with clear. Don't like the finish? Sand and re-do.

Patience seems to be the order of the day and you should have a good paint job.

Dullbird is going for a flat finish so clear is not needed .

I haven't seen that expression since I read "Educating Rita".
I guess it's an English expression.
I can picture the effect - not what you want on a paint job.

I'm pleased to hear that you seem to be getting on top of the job after the shaky start.
