Thumbs up my 1st LR could this be a lemon?

hi, just found this 2001 Land Rover Discovery II 01MY Td5 Royal Blue. 5 Speed Manual Wagon. TURBO INTERCOOLED DIESEL. don't no how many k's but have just emailed and asked it's got $10 990 asking price for it, does this seem really cheap, want it for touring, weekend toy, will be doin the usual mods susp, tyres etc, etc. is the td5 ok or am i better of lookin for later model 300tdi as they are not as computerised. is workin on a td5 hard or do-able by your average diy'er. it's near melbourne can any 1 recommend a good LR mech to do a pre purchase as i live in norhtern nsw. any info would be very greatful 4. cheers.

Well that's a can of worms!
TD5 is better on power and fuel consumption over a TDI.
Parts are more exy. Oil and filters cost more but are done less frequently so it works out.
You can do the maintenance yourself but the TD5 does like to be looked after. A lot of people will say go the TDI and a lot will so go the TD5. It comes down to preference.

Are parts more exy? I've never bought Tdi parts, but I thought the air and oil filter were very similar. The TD5 does have the centrifuge though. Whats the difference in oil? I just changed mine yesterday and put 7.5 litres of engine oil into it, but again am not sure what the tdi uses. I also always thought the Tdi got better economy, but I guess thats no surprises considering how much power they dont make. The TD5 then runs the same transmission, transfer and diff lube specs as the Tdi. Really the TD5 should be a little cheaper with the longer service intervals but as you say, there wont be much in it.

Oh, make sure it has the centre diff lock nut on the transfer case.
    Cheers
    Slunnie

Have you asked how many K's it has done?

I inquired about one at a dealer in Melbourne, same colour etc, and it had over 300,000k's.

I just looked at a 2000 Disco TD5 bullbar new winch driving lights. 172,000 km $14,990. So I think you will find that the one your looking at has a lot of k's on it.

Cant believe im going to say this as im going to cop a lot of flack for it but.......What is the best Disco 2 to be looking for.

I had a drive of Rangiemans new Deefa the other day and other than being manual (I have buggered knee's so cant work heavy clutch pedals for very long anymore) it went like a rocket.

Ive been looking over my poor old Disco over the last 2 days and some rust is coming through in places I dont want it to as well as things are getting tired but it's only done 317,000kms.

I very much doubt that a 300 Tdi would get the same power as the TD5 BUT....I dont really think that it is all that nessesary either.

I would love a Deefa but there is the problem with them being manual and the other with me being.......FAT and so I struggle to get comfy though the Extreme seat felt good and the park brake wasnt hitting the permanent bruise from all the times Ive driven older Deefas in the past.

SO.....unless someone has an around 2001 Deefa extreme with auto conversion done for a very reasonable price, what should I be looking for in one of those good for nothing D2's.....or should I just go back to a Landcruiser
