..sorry to be foreboding - it's my job, but the reason for the Swift comment is that they can cause severe food poisoning, especialy from dodgy places in the Derwent where they filter feed on viruses and bacteria. JC, cook them well mate, though this won't denature any toxins present in the flesh...so...check back in 12-24 hours, and we all hope you and yours will be OK!!!!

PS had a case of shellfish paralysis last week - he ate them from Woodbridge, off the rocks, raw.....

...but then again a LR specialist will have guts of rusty steel

They can't be all bad. When I go down there on holidays and stay at my mum's place at South Arm, we walk down onto the beach in front of her house and pick them off the rocks down in front of the army property on the point. Have had plenty of good feeds from there and never been ill yet.
    Cheers .........

Small world Pedro - I also lived on KI for quite a few years. My old man worked at KI Scheelite for about 7 years. I went to boarding school in Burnie & Launceston, but my brother went through high school on the island.

We used to get in trouble with the hostesses on Ansett all the time for smuggling mutton birds back to Tassie in cabin baggage at the end of holiday periods. Could always sell them in Tassie for a bit of extra pocket money.

Used to love going out mutton birding, but have also had quite few nasty frights from the tiger snakes that used to share our passion.
    Cheers .........

Love Tassie oysters, when i was a kid we used stop on the way down to Port Arthur and get them fresh off the rocks and have an oyster and mutton bird feast . Last time i was over we went down to the wharf and bought a heap of fresh seafood.

Whilst I love eating oysters when I'm up in NSW, we're blessed here on the Bellarine with mussel farms just offshore and this morning I bought 2 kilos for $8 fresh off the boat at Portarlington Pier.
Will saute some garlic and onion and a tiny bit of chilli, place on top of mussel in shell and sprinkle some grated tasty cheese and place in oven for 5 minutes. To die for.
Usually have a nice chilled white with them but I'm on my annual January off the grog month to try and replenish the liver.....God, it's only the 5th!

    Hi Mrs B,

The Bellarine Peninsula is the bottom left hand lump on Port Philip Bay, you travel through Geelong to get there. the northern bits of the lump have little villages like Drysdale, Portarlington, Indented Heads and St Leonards.
the southern bits have towns like Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads (Sea Change), Point Lonsdale & Queenscliff.
Beautiful part of Victoria and far enough away from Melbourne. gets bloody cold in winter though.
