    Going to Lightning Ridge

Hi everyone, well I'm off to Lightning Ridge in the middle of next week and I was wondering if anyone had any experience traveling out that way this time of year.

I know it will be hot and that they do get rain at this time of year but what are the chances of me getting stuck on a hill top for a week waiting for flood waters to recede.

Also whats out that way that is worth seeing besides whats in Lightning Ridge. Any information or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Jeff

Nice cheap meals at the Bowling club. There is enough to see depending on what you want to do. Its mainly Diggings. The last time we were there was mid last year . We towed our caravan out to Lorne station just outside of town . basic camping there too and some cabins . they often run tag alongs to the places of interest including opal diggings. Once you get into town thre is an info place with maps and leaflets like any ther touristy places . We found it interesting enough to stay a week . Cheers porgey

It will be very HOT ...but there's a town pool

Not much rain expected for the next couple of weeks... and you get plenty of warning about flooding

If you've got little kids with you watch them around abandoned mineshafts...

    Have a safe trip

Chunky . There is plenty of places to fossick as long as its not someone else's claim Lol . We did a bit of fosicking but didnt find anything of significant value, there were stories going around about a woman who found a $30,000 Opal In a Mullock heap near the Info centre we actualy had a bit of a fossick around there but did no good but went to the local dealers and bought some nice opals for reasonable prices . As 87 County said "there is a pool" , the pool is thermal and averages 42C . We stayed just out of town at Lorne Station its a working cattle station and it has a Camp ground ,was $15 per night for a powered site. there are a few local miners live there they have a bit of stuff for sale got to be able to bargain though. at night there is a big campfire usualy there are one or two talented bush balladeers or when we were there was a guy with Electric Guitar playing the Shadows numbers I like that music and it was relaxing .

If you want to make it I would do a serious service on the rad, cooling or it will not make it.All vehicles suffer when it goes over 40 degree's and I would not even try it if the cooling system wasn't 100%. Pat

Isn't there an underground hotel/motel? That'd be pretty cool - literally!

None at the ridge. There is a good one in the opel fields in SA that I've stayed in but I can't remember the name.Go for a drive to the Grawlings, about 40k outside the ridge, you can do a lap of the diggings and there is a good underground mine you can walk through.I would take all the food etc with you also, not much in the way of shopping, the locals go to Walget which is a pretty ordinary town.
