    Budget Defender iPod advice

    Hi

I'm looking to buy a simple AM/FM radio that includes a plug on the face to put an iPod in. Anyone have any ideas? My mate has a bog standard new model Commodore and i saw his set up and though "That'll do me"

I will revisit the threads on this topic but IIRC you guys were all talking about getting some quality sound. To be honest I just want avergae quality (well I want to pay as little as possible).

My aim is not to improve the quality so much as get something that will take an iPod direct into the system. My current set up works but uses an FM transmitter and it's a big clumsy set up - with my GPS and my phone charge etc Ive got wires running from the 12v plug and bits all over the shop. The GPS also effects transmission quality.

I could be convinced to upgrade the speakers in the original round holes but I just don't have the coin to be doing much more.

Anyone seen any heard any basic units with a facia plug?

    cheers in advance.

Sorry, can't help - but I'll be needing the exact same thing sooner rather than later, please let me know how you go...

    Good luck!

I think most basic units now have the aux plug in the face, my daughter recently bought a pioneer unit for around $150 IIRC. If you want to control the Ipod from the unit I think you'll be up for a bit more.

I'm doing some surfing at the moment.

I have an aftermarket stereo in there at the moment and I *think* it may be stacker ready, I can see a cd button or something on there but no cd slot. Or it may have RCA plugs on the back. If either of these things is true then I can buy a connector. The problem here is I believe getting a stereo unit out of a Defender is as easy and as pleasant as pulling your pancreas out your backside.

I think i want a unit that connects with the docking port on the pod rather than into the earphone jack at the top. That way it does not run of the iPod power.

    Anyway thanks for the advice.

    cheers

is it a removable face? you sure the slot is not behind?
my stereo you cant see the CD slot you press a button and the face flips down and reveals the slot from behind the face

oh and I have an am/FM transmitter and its great can take the ipod into one more car I can run it off the ipod power or 12v from the car via the cigarette lighter.

I recently bought one of these. Although its not so budget, it really isn't that expensive when you look at all of its features.

It runs Windows CE. I have IGO 8 maps (which were included). Really good street navigation. I will load OZI Explorer and HEMA 4wd maps later on. It has an in buit GPS receiver with an external antena.
7.5" touch screen. Bluetooth handsfree. DVD which plays all regions. USB interface on the front which reads all formats.
I have hooked up a reverse camera just above the rear washer jet, great for reversing on a tight bush track.
Also have fixed RCA's on the console just under the unit. One set for AUX in and another for out. I plug my IPod into the RCA's via Apples composit cable and can play movies and music direct.

yeh we run a very similar unit....except we dont have the sat nav part of it....still thats what the toughbook is for to navigate the unit is for watching topgear while we do so......and before anyone jumps down my throat....I turn the unit towards me so ian as the driver cant see it.

Thats not for safety thats just to annoy him as I sit there cracking up and you can tell he wants to know whats going on

    Hey
I bought a unit from Strathfield it was a cheap brand Boss I think was about $150 but it has a SD card slot on the front and a USB slot on there as well. Its brilliant, a 2GB SD card holds about 300-500 songs screen displays all track names and able to put them in separate folders for artist. Its also got CD player.
My mate bought one of the Sony's with the i Pod hole in the front but having to control two separate items at the same time as were the heck do you sit the i Pod so it doesn't get damaged. He found it was a complete pain but he loved my setup and at half the price who wouldn't.
That's my two cents any way.
