At least they weren't fire ants...

Dad had issues in his caravan with ants moving in when he wasn't there. He tried spraying etc. Ended up putting one of those automatic dispenser things on the wall that emit a small measured dose of "anti critter" stuff. That seems to have sorted them out.

I seem to remember an ant expert on the radio once saying that some ants like sweet food and others are attracted to spicy. You have to find what your ants like then apply a suitable "ant wacker".

If all else fails see if there is anything in the Eat-A-Bug Cookbook -

The Eat-a-bug Cookbook: 33 Ways to ... - Google Book Search

Chapter 5 for ants. Apparently the formic acid in them gives a "vinegar-like taste what goes well with potato chips and microbrewed beer...."

I found the book. Looking for volunteers to try and report back....

    Hi Martyn,
If they are the ones I'm thinking of, they are dark brown & orange. I know of them as "honey ants" & they don't bite. Are these the ones?

    All,
When I left my 'van unused for a while, the black sugar ants appeared to have set up a nest in the 'van wall. I couldn't get rid of them, even using "Ant Rid" baits.

Then I tried "Ant Rid" liquid in a dropper bottle. You "squirt" the liquid in the path of the ants, they love it and take it back to the nest, also killing the queen.

    No more problems,
    Peter

Sugar ants.....looks like its a commonly used name for a whole species of ants that vary in colour and size but which in nature eat sugars from flowering plants and by farming other insects like aphids

If you look at the CSIRO webpage of common ant names you'll see what I mean

CSIRO TERC - Australian Ant Common Names

NM...can't be bothered logging Numpty out and my self in

But we grew up knowing the large orange and black ones as sugar ants
