    For the spelling Purist

For the members that are not happy with the spelling and grammar used by “uneducated” fellow LR owners in this forum.
Perhaps we can add THIS dictionary of the forum software to make everybody happy
There is also THIS message translator on line.

Re Chucaro's spelling test, be aware it uses American spelling. It marked me wrong for "plagiarise" - it wanted "plagiarize".

Probably laziness ... some people can't be bothered, I suppose it's too much effort to use a dictionary!

Yes, it does get pretty annoying, but you're not likely to change it now ... it's been an ongoing issue for as long as I can remember. So maybe the best recourse is to try to ignore it!

Do the offenders realise they're doing it? Or do they simply not care?

One I see a bit is "thort". I also see "tire", "mite". Actually, do a search for "mite", it's used a lot here!

Anyway, one thing that ****es me off about poor spelling, apart from it (in my mind) making the offender appear to be an illiterate monkey, when you're using the forum search function to find something and the poster has misspelt it, you'll never find it.

Firefox has a spellcheck built in. I'm sure I.E. does too. Why don't people use them?

In the IT world would a spellcheck on line correct our favourite word(s) (and there is some dispute about whether it is one or two).

The word for some one who searches the internet to correct spelling on a Land Rover Forum:

    LAN Drover

    or laNd ROver
    Mahn England

    DEFENDER 110 D300 SE '23 (the S M E G)

Ex DEFENDER 110 wagon '08 (the Kelvinator)

Typical problem with the English language

I remember here in Oz, at Talangatta the locals believe that it have to be pronounced Talangattá that means with accent on the a then the locals in Coolangatta do not use the accent on the a

No rules inside a country or between the English speaking countries

As much as I may not like US spelling, Noah Webster did standardise spelling there and simplified a lot of it.

US spelling will eventually dominate. BTW, have you ever noticed that website which offer various language versions use the US flag to denote English, not the Union Jack?

You'll never get to the end of this thread. There can be no consensus.

Probably not...but subtract those who have an inherent disability or a new comer, or the occasional error here and there...it is the barrage of inane writings/text speak that I think most people find irritating. It's pure and simple laziness and yes Lardy at some post previously....people do give a toss. Employers give a toss...a decent teacher gives a toss and a caring parent gives a toss. Learning to read and write is the foundation of any society.....in the whole....don't bore with those that fall outside the norm.

If I can see my 6 year old son work hard to make sure his sentences and spelling is correct....aside from those examples outlined above...then so can anyone else. In all honesty...when I see a post here or anywhere else that is filled with more mistakes than you could poke a stick at....I don't even bother. Aside from that...there is no excuse with all the tools that can spell check. No one's perfect......but at least try.....it's not rocket science is it?

    Regards

    Stevo
