OK, I was wrong about there being nothing new to say on the subject.
This thread almost doubled in length while I was typing my previous post.![]()

Have I missed my chance to enter this debate?
Hmmm, I saw DB's post on this subject in Soapbox a while ago....and left it alone as 2009 is the year for me to not get so involved in this place ( sorry fans....you know who you are) as I have made perceptions of people and vis a vis, them about myself without having ever met them, so trying to steer clear of "hot" topics.
That said.....I did a thread on this ages ago, it annoyed the majority, as a poll was done....but let's clarify that. It's not the odd mistake, we are all prone to that, no matter how well we can spell...but personally and as I think Inc pointed out in DB's thread...it's not those spelling or grammatical errors...it's the ones where it is just an onslaught of jibberish.
Just as you can be judged on appearance, basic learning skills such as spelling will be judged on a forum. In those circumstances where it is littered with errors, it can be a case of many things. One can make up their own mind, but to pull someone up on it......welllll.....that is just plain rude in my book.
One wouldn't correct someone for usage of a wrong word face to face ( well from memory Ron might) but the average person wouldn't...unless a mate or a loved one. SWMBO continually uses the word "seen" in the wrong context, but she also has a running High Distinction in all her Uni subjects

I always reckon, it's not how you say something that matters, but what you are saying.
If you are looking at how I say, your probably not listening to what I am saying.
Bit like when people take the **** out of a Pommie accent instead of listening to what is being said.
Few weeks ago. the Grandson grabbed me by both ears, put his little face
right into mine and said "Listen to me"
I was in the middle of correcting his grammar.
It depends on the context whether it is misspelled or not. Ditto with "tire".
What annoys me more is using SMS text language and abbreviations, or stuff like "guyz" - why not use the correct spelling "guys". That's either laziness or an ill-advised attempt to be cool.
Equally, someone on here continually types "my'n" instead of "mine" - a spell check would pick that up.
If FF is used, then incorrect spellings (but not incorrectly used homophones) will be immediately apparent by the red underline. IE needs an add-in, e.g. IE Spell.
Another pet hate is the use of "of" instead of "have" - e.g., would of, to of, could of, should of, instead of would have, to have, could have, should have. I "could of" pointed a few fingers here....
One member here is absolutely appalling in his spelling. I haven't seen spelling as bad as his in a long time - but I don't correct it as it could drive him away (my time is limited anyway).
It's not just about spelling, it's also about the incorrect use of words, e.g , the "would of" mentioned above, or "bellowed" instead of "billowed" - entirely different things. The incorrect use of words can give the wrong meaning to a post. Even the lack of correct punctuation can do the same.
I flagged that here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/888285-post15.html
Another pet hate is the incorrect placement of commas and full stops. How can someone type a space after a word, the comma, then start the next word without a space, e.g., "I thought ,she said..". Ditto with full stops.
Surely they'd see from all the reading they do that it is patently wrong?
However, that said, some who cannot spell can do things that I cannot. Should they rubbish me because of that? Maybe.![]()

Mate, I don’t think you (or I) intend to offend anyone one, but it is a sensitive subject with some. They are quite a few people on this forum that have some issues with spelling, grammar, etc. and I don't think it reflects on them adversely. Personally, I read things a couple of times over because I am very conscious of typos. Some people don't care and some struggle a bit with the English language, but they are still great people and would bend over backwards to help you for no reward. So does it really matter ?
