Yes, the Hella have a removable sleeve that allows them to be used in cigarette lighter sockets.

That sort of defeats the purpose doesn't it.

The whole idea of using a different type of connector is because the cig. sockets are inadequate.

No, it actually makes the plug more versatile - my Waeco fridges have this plug so I can use it with the collar in my car that only has a cigarette socket and in my other car that has a Hella socket.

Fair enough. But, the idea being that a normal cig. socket is not up to the job, how does putting a sleeve on a Hella/Merit plug, make the cig. socket suddenly work better. The main reason for not using the cig. socket in the first place is that they will usually fail when asked to provide more than a couple of amps, so using a different plug..........defeats the purpose.

I have a "numpty plug" in the back of the Defender for the Engel. No problems with it so far.

I think the installer used it because it was "outboard" and did not know where to put an inboard plug like your usual 12v plug at the back.

The "Numpty plug", if I go to the sparky shop will they give me on of those plugs.

    Is there a Numpty socket??

I have been using this type of plug on my fridge and compressor for 20+ years with no problems.

Saying that I also use the marine 2 pin type plug and socket on the camper trailer because the socket is weather proof.

I too have used these plugs for many years & have never had the connection vibrate loose.

They may be "old school", but they're very reliable.

we use this type with either socket depending on application

I use these on all my 12v stuff. I have a three outlet, individually switched with pilot lights, panel in the back of the County, and an extension cord and a three outlet power board I usually plug into the portable generator. I think they are the best of all.

    Hi Brendan,

Those things are otherwise known as 'Hella Plugs'. They fitted them to the Camels and they're brilliant. As mentioned previously, they're also fitted to BMW bikes but avoid the 'DIN' plugs that are of a similar design...
