People rubbish us because of our convict heritage.
Quite frankly, I'm in awe of Australia's early settlers.
Interesting to see there are a fair number of women on that list, and the number of years they were serving for their "crimes".
My family migrated out here in the 50's to work in Shepparton, and Erich's family "came" here as internees during WW2 because they were German. They were placed in a camp in Tatura - not far from Shepparton. His parents always said it was the best thing that ever happened as they fell in love with Australia and travelled around extensively. (Not in a Landrover though - in a VW Beetle!!)

My best mates older brother used to call me 'shonky' instead of my name, i dont think he has ever used my name, it was damn annoying, then I found out what it means, still didn't know why he was calling me that though.
Shonky : dubious, underhanded. E.g. a shonky practice, shonky business etc.

Ahhhhh....bugger...at first I thought the word POHM referred to something god like based on Pedro's response.......well I still kind of make sense....if we are being invaded by POMs...or POHMs....historically that is being invaded by our ancestors....yesQuote:

By the way, thats called humor and is not meant to be taken literally, it is meant to get a laugh and not meant to offend anyone
Wrong word StevoIt was "good" misspelt as "God"

I also think AULRO is great.
That is why I recently became a subscriber, I figured my trial period was over.
Although the derivation of Pom or Pommy from POHM (Prisoner of Her Majesty) sounds attractive, it seems to have no basis. According to the Australian National Dictionary the word derives from pomegranate (also pommygrant or pummygrant) used as rhyming slang for immigrant. First in print in The Bulletin in 1912, but presumably in widespread use before that in speech. In 1913 The Sun gives "pommy" as taking over from the long established term "new chum".
