Anyone driven Sydney to Adelaide in a day?

If you have 2 drivers its easy. I have not done syd to adelaide, but my father and i have gone from syd to melbourne and back, straight (towing another car on the way back) several times. We have also done sydney to logan (QLD) and back (again towing cars), and 2 weeks ago we picked up a p38 on a car trailer from Moe in vic, and drove straight home.

Towards the end, if you need to sleep, just have one. Even if there is an hour to go, you can still pull over and get 1/2 an hour of shut eye and be refreshed. Another trick is to get a 6 pack of V energy drinks, they taste like manure, but they do their job (you do end up stopping every hour after that for a slash).

I've done Sydney-Adelaide-Sydney a couple of times recently.

2003 in my Morris Minor. 13hrs each way, averaged just over 100kph including fuel stops.

2006 in my RR towing a car trailer. 13hr trip to Pinnaroo (just over SA border) & set up the tent. Next day into Adelaide (just south of) & pick up a car + lots of parts.
As it was a 40+deg day, drove the Hay Plain that night & stopped between Hay & Narraderra at midnight. 38deg at midnight wasn't nice & slept on a rest area table.
Next day was just a run back to Sydney in around 7hrs.
I sat on 90kph for the trip to conserve fuel.

Not a problem, adelaide to Newcastle in one day, left Adelaide 4pm arrived Newcastle 2:30pm next day. Tiring but easily doable.

We've all got our records, but its not a ****ing contest.

I've done Tib - syd in a day and was fine and normally drive from Syd to Gympie in a stint. I've also had a microsleep before getting the west side of the blue mountains.

Remember many of these comments are by truckers and I do believe that seat time brings conditioning that allows you to drive more distance - and that this also has to do with concentration levels and how tired you are. I also tend to think that if you are slept but tired then Coke etc works, but if you are genuinely tired - then Coke etc does not work.

15hrs each way is the trip time, but play it by ear, don't have expectations. There is no need to kill yourself.

I have no idea what the roads on the Hay plane or to Broken Hill are like but the sort of hours that people are quoting would make a Sydney- Melbourne-Adelaide route about the same in hours. After towing a car trailer on back roads and a few towns I have decided that you need to seriously reconsider the kms vs the time and ease of a longer but better road.

Hay Plains are pretty good. Strike is more the problem rather than the road.

Each time Erich & Andrew go to either Victoria or Qld. to pick up stuff, I give them the "don't drive if you're tired" lecture. It's simply not worth it. They just roll their eyes .. you know "here she goes again" but I do sincerely worry.
And there are the other drivers on the road to consider as well --how long have they been driving and how experienced/tired are they??

I have driven a Defender up to Arnhem Land alone twice (we took Sharon's car up there twice and Erich was driving the Disco so we were travelling together). The last 700 ks is on dirt road requiring 100% concentration. We did it both times in 4 days - 4,500ks. I certainly would not have liked to have tried it any quicker. For me, without doubt, the second day on the road is the worst as far as being tired is concerned. We pulled up every couple of hours for a few minutes break and also stopped for lunch. Never drove at night, as that is plain crazy unless it's absolutely necessary. Never-the-less at one stage, before Mt. Isa, I was absolutely stuffed at 11am. Had to stop for a couple of hours of sleep as my concentration level was zilch.

However, we have done the same trip at least 20 times over the years, but with two drivers, and that's not a problem at all.

To keep up continued concentration that is required for long distance driving is very hard unless you are used to it - those road train drivers and interstate truckies get my greatest respect.
