Brian and Brian (BMKal), I used to haul, as an Owner driver for Roadfreighters and their low loaders had 20" low profile tyres, unfortunately they were retreads and I would blow at least one tread every trip, this was back in 1987 and I don't know if Nitrogen was available for tyres then.
The worst trip for tyres (when I had my own tri-axle 41" Fruehauf) was Sydney to Bourke and back, during summer, I used to keep the speed down, as tyre costs were coming out of my pocket, but till I got a full complement of cleanskins allround, I would blow at least 1 retread a trip. On the way back from Bourke on the Bourke to Nyngan stretch I came across a Shell Tanker with 3 blown tyres, it was around 50C and same as me he only had 2 spares, he wanted to borrow one of mine, but I couldn't take the chance, as I was carting a 20' reefer container with 22 tons of chilled horsemeat leaving for Germany that night from Port Botany. Gave him a lift into Nyngan and the local tyre place fixed him up, those were the days, bloody good riddance, must have been nuts, Regards Frank.

Ron, drove from Balmain (Sydney) to Mary Kathleen (between Mt.Isa and Cloncurry Qld.) in a weekend with 2 hours sleep at Dubbo NSW and about 4 hours near Blackall Qld. in a 1969 Ford Fairlaine 302 W.
Travelled up through Bourke, through the centre of Qld. to Winton. From Winton on the Landsborough Hwy., this is before it was sealed, the usual route back then (late 70's) was the then named Boulia Beef road. The Highway I took was then 2 wheel ruts with grass growing up the middle, dry river crossings required building up ramps (of rocks) to get onto the concrete fords. Lost both exhaust systems and it took me over 9 hours to get from Winton to Cloncurry 300+miles, near killed me, Regards frank.

Have driven from Sydney to Melbourne, Northern Ring Road and out the Western Highway to Horsham and onto Mockinya. Leaving Sydney after I left work at 8.30 pm, arriving Mockinya mid afternoon, so Adelaide in a day would be possible along the Hay Plain.

That said, with only one driver by the time I was on the Western Highway and having done a full day's work before leaving Sydney, I thought the sign at the side of the road read "Sheep cure Fatigue", so Sydney-Adelaide in a day with one driver would not be recommended.

They would probably do that as well.

Done sydney to melbourne a couple of times, and Sydney-Mel-Tailem Bend in one day. - Don't think I would be too keen now though.
