Have you timed the Broken Hill route, cos it's around 300km further - surely you'd have to be losing a lot of time thru towns for it to be worth your while driving an extra 300km.

yeah Broken Hill certainly seems longer. To make up time over 300 k's.....hrmmm
Whereis says fifteen hours and fifteen minutes.

The Hay plains route is better, used to drive Sydney-Adelaide 18/20 hours (depending on load), then straight back Adelaide-Canberra hauling the walls of Parliament House, sometimes twice a week, Regards Frank.
No, just normal practice to make a mile where you can. Long straight flat roads with light traffic and almost no towns and small ones at that. Those big Detroits did that easily on those long flat runs for hours on end.
Early 80's truck times with a White Road Boss, 8V92TA, RT12515, and 3.7 diffs:-
Bris-Sydney 14 hours,
Bris-Melbourne 20-22 hours
Bris-Adelaide 24 hours
Bris-Winton 20-24 hours, depending on number of trailers. If pulling a double, we had to go back to Brisbane from Toowoomba after dropping one trailer at Toowoomba, and get the second trailer.
I used to drive furniture trucks between Adelaide / Sydney / Brisbane (usually coming in through Towoomba & Ipswich).
The ONLY time that we would travel via Broken Hill was when travelling between Adelaide & the Queensland destinations. When travelling between Adelaide & Sydney, we travelled the Hay Plains route all the time. There is no way that the Broken Hill route is quicker.
