You have to remember that, unlike the UK, there are very few "black" people in Australia. Persons of African descent are rare. There are plenty of Asian, Indian, Pakistani, etc., but they don't seem to be as active in the political arena as they are in the UK.

Racism is a fact of life no matter where you are, the reason it is more apparent in countries like Australia is because if we speak out we are generally not scared to be missing the next morning. You will also find that our government has dealt a fatal blow in ensuring that racism is strong by favouring a race with handouts.
I have found that Australians on a general basis suffer from tall poppy syndrome, most of what I hear is why do they get so much more for no reason apart from their race, how often have you gone for a job and on an application it asks whether you are aboriginal or Torres Straight islander, its not there for interest sake, its there because the employer will get a subsidy for employing you. I worked for a company years ago where it was manditory to do country service and be away from your family for weeks at a time, if you did not do it or stick it out your would be terminated unless you were aboriginal, we all understood the rules and lived by them but everyone resented the group that got paid the same and did not have to do the hard parts.

Australia also has another reason for a higher perceived racism rate and that is due to allowing people to become citizens and allowing them to set up there own communities which they had in their homelands. That sounds like a horrible thing to say but most of these people have come from oppressed countries where you are not allowed to talk out of turn and it is not safe to walk the streets at day or night. These people are generally afraid when they turn up, but it does not take them long to figure out that you can talk in Australia without fear of being gunned down in the street. Old habits die hard, if you come from a violent background it will eventually come back out and if there is no one there to stop it, it will happen. Most of us will never understand what alot of these peole have been put through there whole lives.

Australia seems racist because we are a truley free country and people are to a point allowed to say what they want, that also means that people we percieve to be wrong are allowed to talk as well.

The fact that the media are allowed to put any spin on a story doesnt help either

Hmmm! interesting thread, we are now generally more racist society that 40 years ago, and yes, the Govt sponsored "Multiculturism" doctorine has a lot to answer for, in the 60's there was already a very diverse range of cultures and religions here, BUT everybody dressed in western clothes, tried hard to speak english and to generally fit in, since the "multicultural" edict there has been a remarkable change, complete suburbs/areas that english and western dress is a rarity,old cultural prejudices and hates still rule daily lives in this their new country, (while typing this TV news states another multiple stabbing in Sydney), and yes, I have been affected by reverse racism, where in the 60's if you didn't have an ethnic name one would not get a job in the motor manufacturing industry as preferance was given to "New Australians", I eventually started my Great Grandfathers German surname and, I have seen signs in shop windows in Sydney inner suburbs stating "yes,we speak english" and that was back in the 60's in Leichardt, but everybody wore western clothes and tried to assimilate, now, they dress in their traditional clothes and victimise those that don't.

Multicultism is the worst thing that has happened to Australia in the last 100 years.

This is the craziest thread I think I have ever read.
Having lived in 3 countries and visited 35 or so, I believe Australia is about the least racist country in the World.
We have made many mistakes like "multiculturism" which has enabled /approved European immigrants to bring their centuries old hatreds with them eg the tennis last week.

Why do the minorities of many countries want to live here eg Hazaras from Afganistan.

However one thing I agree on.
ALL HUMANS ARE RACIST, and it is mostly based on colour.
The lighter/whiter you are the better.

My Tamil maid in KL once called my wife in to see a Congalese arrested for drugs at the airport. She said "Madam look at that man, he is so BLACK"
Coming from a Tamil who was about one shade off, I thought it was pretty funny/ironic.
I have sat at a Chinese banquet in Beijing to have the Chinese guy next to me say "Mr Armbruster, you realise that the Chinese are the purest race in the World, we are 99% Han." I said that's OK mate "We are all mongrels in OZ"
The Japanese have this lovely belief that they are all descended from the Sun God, hence the flag and their absolute belief that they are the superior people of the world because of that fact. Being immigrants from China does not sound as sexy.
EVER wondered why Chinese girls all wear enormous hats in the sun? While some of it is about not wanting to be considered a farm labourer, the other is not being taken for a ugh SE Asian.
The Thais have a word for non European ie Asian foreigners. Kaaack.
They describe all Burmese /Indian/Nepalese/Laotians/Cambodians etc . It is a derogatory term. All whites are Farangs which is a corruption of French.

BTW Isan is an area of Thailand in the North East . They are Thais and their beef is not about race but economic issues as Isan is the poorest area while Bangkok is like a separate country. Their unlikely champion who gave them lots of bribes in elections was Takhsin Shinawatra , an ex army general who promised them a better distribution of income. He is like most Thais in our terms completely corrupt. The opponents with the yellow armbands are the educated Bangkok based Thai middle class who do not want their taxes spent on the peasants.

However 40% of the Thai population are Chinese and own 80% of the assets.
The Thais promoted racial harmony by banning Chinese language schools and forcing the Chinese to take Thai names. Chinese cannot join the army, however the child of a Chinese (man) and Thai (woman) can join the army/civil service.

This forced the Chinese to assimilate, and there is far less racial tension there than in Malaysia, where the Chinese still go to chinese schools, and have Chinese names and own 80% of the assets. This and the Moslem insistence that any Chinese marrying a Moslem must convert to Islam, has meant that the races do not mix much. They do not even speak the same language. Hardly any Chinese have more than survival Bahasa Malaysia, While 20 years ago there was almost no English among moslems. this has changed however when Mahartir realised that his country was going out backwards with no English.

But I think you will find some scientific competitiveness between the various territorial claims that could be called racism. Educated people just hide racism better IMHO.

I wrote quite a post but have scrapped it.

Instead I'll ask a question, seeing as many have already mentioned the word.

What does Multiculturalism mean to you ?

Does anyone have a hard and fast definition ?
