    Australia the most racist country?

    Hi all,

Whilst listening to good ol' ABC local radio a few nights ago, they were having a discussion about whether or not Australia is one of, or the most racist country.

It got me thinking a bit! I've been overseas a few times amd into completely different cultures (Eg. African nations, India, Middle East) and to be honest, I can't really say that I've suffered any real racism whilst overseas, yet lately we've heard so much about how Australia treats people of other nations, whether tourists, or immigrants etc., so what do we all think it's like for people coming here?

I asked a few of my close friends what they thought of the statement, two of whom live overseas and have been here as tourists and one told me a shocking story about when she went to the Gold Coast and even had bottles and rubbish thrown at her and was basically told to go back to where she belonged (Singapore) . Quite a few of my friends have been not even vaguely surprised people think we are extremely racist, yet others have been dumbfounded.

What are everyone else's thoughts?? What about people who have migrated here, how did you find Australia at first?

Racism is everywhere and anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

Thankfully we don't have a gun culture or instead of rubbish it would have been bullets.

There are so many countries that have had wars based on differences of race or religion that have continued for hundreds of years and are continuing today. Take Serbia and Kosovo, Croatia or anywhere in the Balkans, Israel and the Arab world, Northern Ireland, Russia and Chechen, Rwanda, India and Pakistan. Francophone Parisites and anyone not French speaking.

Thankfully we live in one of the better countries although not free of racism and likely never be.

racism is everywhere, not just australia

big problem is when the outsiders look in and see what goes on without seeing the whole picture

just think back a couple of years when the NT government was criticised by the UK prime ministers wife for being racist due to the majority of the jail population being aboriginies..... didnt occur to the silly mole that the majority of the general population in the NT arent white.....

From what I have seen Australians are on average slightly mildly racist. Some of it is for good reason based on some individuals experiences, but then these experiences tend to be limited at best with the result of a whole group of people being tared with the same brush. The rest of Australia and Australians have based there views on second hand information or TV etc.
    Having said that!!
You mentioned Singapore, personally I would regard Singapore as a very racist place, based on not only religion but also colour, although this may not be legislated it is very evident to anyone who lives there for some time.
Closer to home Indonesia its not that long ago that ethnic Chinese were being beaten up and killed in the streets.
Malaysia, legislation based on ethic and religious lines
Thailand, internal racism between ethic Thais and Issarn, ( issarn being the majority) which is spilling into politics NB the recent protests. also it would explain the Thai militaries reaction to ( on the news tonight) Burmese boat people who happen to be Muslim. There is a Muslim group bombing southern Thailand, killing teachers etc.
Or even Burma which don’t even recognise Muslims as citizens.
China where going to the wrong church can put you in jail, no trial.
Russia, if you are not a Russian citizen you cant work in Retail etc.
    Working around the map
Most of the Balkan countries, unless you are a citizen and of the correct religion, you cant own land or a business, get papers medical care etc, that’s why there are so many concaves, these are formed around religious lines.
Germany France Italy Holland with there skin heads beating up and killing non whites, in many cases supported by the police.
the Arab nations, what tribe you descend from means if you get a fat check each week or you are sent back into the dessert or just clean the toilets.
Africa, what tribe means if you get to keep your arms and legs or not ?
Missed Spain, colour or if you are of Moorish decent plays a role in some areas, then there s ETA which is based around ethic lines.
South Africa, I don’t need to say any thing there.
America again I don’t need to say anything.
south America, Portuguese or Spanish or\and if you have any Indian blood in some areas is the determining factor of it the current ruling fraction will dispose of you or not etc.
The best one would be a skin head gang in Israel beating up Jews for being Jewish. These boys were children of Russian immigrants who demonstrated there Jewish lineage to get there visas.

At least in Australia, racism is based on a Miss conception generally compounded by some immigrant’s choosing not to assimilate as well as many assizes being a bit closed minded BUT the minority DOINT get abused by the police. DOINT get beaten up buy any organised or supported organisation. Are NOT sysimaticly disadvantaged by the State? Are NOT killed for no reason or killed at all.
But the best thing about Australia is. IMMIGRANTS DO NOT LIVE IN FEAR OF THERE LIVES. Which is often the case of where they came from.

So the short answer to your question is
    NO !!!!

But I suspect you just posted to get a rise out of someone so I volunteered first

Could be an interesting subject!! I too was born and bred in Oz and have no problem with people coming to Australia as a tourist, student or even to live permanently. The big thing I hate is when people from other cultures/countries come to Australia to give a better oppurtunity to their family or to escape a bad life only to bring that same bad life with them and start trying to change the Australian way of life to suit the way it used to be in their native country. Religion, fine, culture, fine but it needs to fit in with the community they are moving into, not the other way around. If that is being racist, well I guess I am guilty. I have worked with Malaysian Muslims, Singaporian Muslims, South African students all of whom have taken to the Australian way of life beautifully and have no problems. I think those that are mostly racist are those that have come to Australia from a different country and cant let go of the way of life in which if they dont like a particular group they try to abuse them so they leave. Dont blame the true blue Aussies as the majority are very welcoming and friendly.

Some very good points there Diana, and I must say i have to agree!

I'm certainly not saying that racism doesn't exist outside Australia, it most certainly does. I was just meaning in my original post that I don't personally believe whilst overseas that I've been targeted because of being a white Aussie... There have always been little quips and whatever, not never made to feel like I had no right to be in a place, if that makes sense.

I'd be very surprised if any one in Australia thought that racism doesn't exist here - thinking back to Cronulla riots as case in point. I'm just not so sure that we can be labelled as the most racist country!

Not in the slightest actually, i genuinely wanted to know what other people think! I did post knowing that there would probably be some strong opinions, and in the hope that a reasonable discussion could be had without it getting too heated - which I hope we are all mature enough to keep it that way.

My thoughts on it are that as a whole Australia does have a bit of a racism problem, but certainly not to the extent that a label of being the most is justified, far from it I think.
