I can be considered racist, for the reasons many placed before me. Firstly, I cannot respect anyone who comes here to live an easy going, Australian lifestyle, and then does not take up the culture they came here to enjoy. This hits two points, firstly, the easy going attitude, secondly ignoring it.

Culture here is easy going. Apart from some, most people will shrug off non-defaming racial comments. I have indian friends happy to be called black men, asian friends that find 'slant' not disrespectful. Come up with the worst scot's blood joke you can find, and ill be happy with it. This is what i like about australia, everyone is proud to be what they are. Different, but EQUAL.

This brings me to my second point. Foreigners that desire an easy going, relaxed EQUAL atmoshpere, are more than welcome, and many choose to come to Australia for that reason. But when they get here, impose the original cultures, and divisive attitudes that made their original location a place of racial difficulty. They choose not to take up the culture they came here for, to the detriment of us all. Join in, mix with what Australia has to offer.

Australia is united in language, and acceptance. Take it easy eh?

    Cheers!

Been in Oz for 4 months now (IT contractor) - had getting on for 10 job interviews, the last one, he looked at my CV and said "another bloody POM", I didn't get the work.

Out of all of the interviews, the only work I have been offered, I was interviewed by an Iranian guy.

Hadn't thought about it until the last interview, but could it be they were all racial knock backs? And although I was the best for the job they preferred to employ an Aussie?

The first Australian issue is unique and i doubt it will be cured in the next century.
But it would seem that if you look at the big picture every culture will produce tossers it's enevitable, ( christ i am getting more Australian by the day i can't spell anymore lol) you cannot have a barrel full of good apples some are going to get bruised and go bad ( and like apples we should throw em in the bin!)
If we were not so self absorbed and took the time to say gday to the local shop keeper and try and understand his foreign accent we would probably find out hes a bloody good bloke.
I guess we are to involved in our own selfish behaviour to notice the kids have gone to pot (and are smoking heaps of it ) or to notice the immigrant shop keeper is a top bloke who is dying to make a mate in his adopted country.
With all written above maybe the point is no one cares enough anymore ?

Perhaps you have ventured onto the "Debate and Relate" forums?
I have also listened to similar situations from others, I am not alone in my situation which is why it is so scary!

Mate don't be like it, that is just the way it is in Australia lol i came to perth in 02 as a crusty backpacker i had a few jobs that i was well over qualified for, but that it seems is the way it goes, you cannot expect to walk into someone elses country and expect them to give you a job just cos you have more qualifications and have more experience in your field than the local man, no that would make economic sense, maybe it's because my fellow countrymen of this here great nation thought i still liked warm beer and was scared of the incessant whinging i would do, is why i got my knock backs you have to have time served, i reckon you'll be right in 6 months if the economic crisis doesn't hit any harder.
you see it's like an apprenticeship once you have put in the hard yards someone will give you a break.
Same thing happened when i came back as a permanent resident, i didn't score work straight away i have earned my citizenship through cash, sweat,a test that is pointless and maybe nearly tears but ya gotta love it.
So stop ya whinging and toughen up princess you'll be right eh mate lol, welcome to Australia

The thing about racism is that it is just so short sighted - to suggest that everyone of a particular race has the same attitude/opinion/belief/actions etc and as a consequence we/you/I will discriminate against them based on this assumption - is plainly a nonsense.

Is Australia a particularly racist country? I don't really think so. But I do think that politicians of certain persuasions have perhaps "played the race card" in the past, and no doubt will in the future, which tends to promote racist views to a greater or lesser extent at times. These "events" are transient - not an all pervasive thing.

I think we saw some of that in the recent past.

Employing someone has a lot more to it than just qualifications. It can be expensive to employ someone new into a business, most bosses want long term employees, who know local standards and terminology. As a backpacker you have no roots to hold you where the employer's business is. You may meet some backpacking "bird" who wants to head up to Cairns and you decide to go with them. The bos then has to go through the process of hiring once again, more expense and more reduced production while the new employee learns the job.

This is not racism, it IS economic sense, to employ the local bloke who'll still be here next year and the year after that. Nothing to do with warm beer or whinging, just experience with backpackers.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
