I'll second the BMW-GS choice.
I've got the R1200GS and it's a very comfortable ride, yet it's still light & agile enough to go sports-bike-baiting...
I do >45,000km on the bike every year so comfort was one of the main reasons I got the GS. I can be in the saddle for 2+ hrs, arrive and still feel fresh... I wouldn't be able to do that on a sports bike. The other reason I went BMW was the shaft drive as I couldn't be bothered doing chains & sprockets every few weeks!!!
