    Unhappy Bent my Number Plate

Well, I bent my number plate on the way home from a meeting tonight . Unfortunately the Lancer that I bent it on needs a new rear end . I was careful not to admit fault, but it is the classic scenario. We were queued in a side street slip lane waiting to enter a main road. There was a break in the traffic and she moved off, so I naturally turned my attention to the approaching traffic waiting for the next break. Unbeknown to me, she inexplicably stopped halfway across the broken give way line, and I promptly drove into the back of her .

New bumper, boot, rear panel and who knows what else for the Lancer, new number plate for the Defender. I think there is just the slightest bend on one end of the front bumper, but it is not worth the insurance hassle to even follow it up. I will get the bumper mounts checked when it is in at the dealer for work next week, but otherwise it will buff out. I couldn't believe the amount of damage to the other car though. When I get over the shock and feeling suitably sorry for the lady, I will probably have babies with the Defender - what a machine!

After the hit the lady got out and had a good go at me (why do people do that before moving their bloody car out of the way?!?). I had to sit and listen to the usual tirade about 4WDs but after she calmed down, I think one of my reasons for owning one was pretty obvious.

So if I feel inclined to repair my "damage" and anyone has a spare 07MY Defender bumper they have lying around after they fitted their bullbar, I might make an offer...... or I might just have to bite the bullet and get me a bullbar now as well . Imagine the carnage next time I rear-end someone....

Bugger! - Did the same thing a while back though not in a Defender - I always watch the car in front now.

The usual human response goes something like SHOCKANGERDEPRESSION/DENIAL ACCEPTANCEMOVING ON.
Sounds like you got the Shock and Anger bit. (Hubby would have got the depression section)

I doubt you've done much damage - sounds like the lancer absorbed most of the energy.

This is probably the part about the whole situation that ****s me the most (we can use that kind of language now that our esteemed PM condones it). The location of the prang is one of the most notorious spots for rear-enders in the western suburbs, and I knew it! Seen at least half a dozen similar bingles or their aftermath on this corner. I have always made a point at this spot of watching the car in front until it has gone before turning my attention to the oncoming traffic, and I WAS watching the car in front on this occasion. She moved off into an obvious gap in the traffic. then just decided to STOP halfway out the gate after I had turned away. With twenty cars queued behind you in peak hour traffic you generally don't wait another ten seconds to be sure (although from now on I probably will and sucks to anyone behind who disagrees with the delay).

I am going through your list of emotions in reverse it seems. I was totally calm and conciliatory at the scene, then quite accepting that I was to blame in any case the insurance companies will sort it out, then got depressed on the way home about having to stand in line for three hours at Queensland Transport while I wait to get a new number plate (oh, and the likely damage to my vehicle which I was sure would present itself on closer inspection), and am only now moving on to anger.

Sorry to hear about your number plate. My first thought on reading the title was you'd been wading through a creek or something.

I happen to have a very nice, respectable front bumper off an 08 Defender sitting at my back door. Trouble is I think the freight costs would be more than the bumper is worth.

Surely if she has crossed the line then she is partially at fault for stopping abruptly ?

My wife did exactly the same thing, but the other driver did'nt want to exchange licences & hardly spoke the lingo.
    Lucky huh?

We checked the number plate & it was a Nissan company car. She ( the driver) was probably going back to Japan soon & slipped the car into the carpark.

We put that to the cops when checking the plates ownership & they agreed - but would need to charge my wife with careless driving first before following it up with the other party. We said what now? & they said you found your way in, you should be able to find your way out of here...

The guy who changed lanes into me a couple of years ago went of about me ramming him. Scratch in the side of the bull bar for me. Stoved in the rear pillar and quarter panel in his comvertable. Guess he was lucky the roof was up at the time as there would have been no way it still worked afterwards.

After his rant and accusations of me ramming him deliberatly I upset him by double checking the details he wrote down. Went strait to the cops and reported everything. waited till his insurance contacted me and gave them the same report.
